New Construction Warbirds, Flugwerk p-51 Fw 190, New Yak 9's

Wed Jul 23, 2014 10:36 pm

I know FlugWerk stopped "manufacturing" p-51 and FW 190 air frames but wasn't sure exactly why ? Was the market too small for them? I realize a few ended up on the bellies, in water etc...

Secondly what ever happened to the Newer Yak 9's that were being built ? Did many come into the US? I'm guessing not many were reproduced ? I remember hearing an A&P who worked on on say he spent half his time strop drilling sheet metal cracks because the sheet metal quality was so poor. Not sure if there was any truth to that.

An infamous guy in the Mid-Atlantic region here has one with an Allison in it that seems to fly pretty well. I believe it had overheating issues at first but custom radiators solved that.

From what I heard, the french owner of a FW190 was not quiet happy by the quality of the kit : lots of issues to solves with massive overcost.
And it was before the plane finished in the Meditarean sea after a propellers or reductor issue forced its pilots to ditch.

With the limit number of kit produced, I didn't see how it could be possible to propose a completly debuged and full packaged producte to the potential owner.

Ours are tickety-boo (after numerous problems with the 190 early on)

A couple of dozen Yak-3/9s were produced, the majority of which are flying happily.

A year or two ago Flug Werk put all the manufacturing jigs and parts for the FW-190 up for sale. Anyone know where they went?

It's great to hear that GossHawk bought the tooling and jigs for the FW 190. They do good work and now hopefully can crank out a few on American soil !

Not wanting to take anything away from Gosshawk's achievements but a great part of that restoration was done in the UK by another restoration shop.

It appears from the website that they also have the remaining Texas Airplane Factory Oscars. Since they are advertising the Oscars as "Potential Projects," I would assume that GossHawk also has the tooling, molds, jigs, etc. for these as well. Sure would love to see another Ki-43 replica or two completed and in the air!

Would a new-build highly modified Oscar do well at Reno?

Indeed Chris.

Its a shame more new Yak 9's were not produced and brought into the country. They aren't bad looking and seem to perform well with an Allison. They seem to be a lot of performance for a "low buck" warbird. Not long ago you could buy one for a third of the cost of a real P-51 IIRC.

You name it - Landing gear problems, structural problems, substandard sheet metal work, etc.:
