I wouldn't think it would be too difficult to fab one up out of modern fiberglass or composites. Now, as to the legality of bolting a homemade plastic gut onto your airplane and proceeding to operate it in the public airspace, I have no idea.

And I suppose the owners/operators of the airplane wouldn't be too wild about taking the airspeed and fuel cost hit that that thing would exact.

Still, it would be so cool....

Chappie, without the guppy dome the cabin of the E-model is already a flying cargo pod, plus each of the 12 outer wing stations are rated at 500lbs if one wanted to carry travel pods ... just sayin'.

Interesting because AD-5Ws never carried these, as they were never intended to deliver ordnance.

Also, I noticed in the photo of 9567 posted on the previous page that it has an AT-141 antenna under the right wing. The normal location for the AT-141 on an AD-5 is...nowhere. The UHF radio was serviced by an antenna built right into the tip of the fin on the -5. But I've cataloged something like five or six different locations for AT-141s on different individual -5 variants, so apparently they were occasionally installed, for whatever reason. Would love to know more about this.

Ken- yes it was quite a bomb truck!

Installing the giant radome would create quite a bit of drag but it would be awesome. I guess it would require the installation of the auxiliary vertical stabs too. It would be awesome to see this aircraft equipped with original equipment like the Ramey Harpoon.

The AD-5Ws didn't have the auxiliary vertical stabs, though the -3W and -4Ws did. When they designed the -5, they had the big radome in mind, and simply made the whole fin about 50% bigger than the single-seaters to take care of it.

You're correct for an EA-1E, and although '152 flew (and is now marked as an EA-1E), she no longer retains many/any of those features and now flies with the 12 outer stations, 20mm cannon, dual controls, empty cabin, etc; that's what I meant.
