Warbird Information Exchange

Hi all,

I went to visit my dad and aunt today. He has a mental illness and I don't see him very often. But he mentioned to me of having an uncle that flew P-39's in Burma. I told him are you sure it was P-39's as I don't remember P-39's in Burma? My dad was an airplane guy too so he knows his airplanes as well and was adamant that it was P-39's. But he might be confused. He could not give me a last name, but the relatives name was Austin.

Any help, I would be grateful.

No P-39s in Burma.

SUNDAY, 2 JANUARY 1944
BURMA-INDIA (Tenth Air Force): In Burma, 27 B-25's and 16 P-39's hit a fuel plant and work shops at Yenangyaung and set the oilfield aflame; 13 B-24's also hit the refinery, causing a large fire, and bomb a power station; 4 other B-24's bomb Akyab on the W coast; about 30 A-36's and P-51's score hits on the Loilaw bridge approaches and bomb the towns in the vicinity.

That is from The Army Air Forces in World War II; Combat Chronology 1941-1945, page 244, almost word for word. Just FYI.

Yes that's were I got the information. I don't see a problem with it. I've been researching aircraft history since I was 15. I don't ever remember P-39's operating in Burma/India/China. But my dad said P-39. the info says P-39, but admit perhaps it's a typo and they meant P-38?
