PPG Paint and ANA/FS Color Codes

Ok, anyone used PPG paint for painting their warbird?

We have contacted them about paint and it seems they do not know ANA standard codes or Federal standard codes as we sent them both codes for each color and they could not recognize them.

We have a can of PPG, code 44721, lustreless olive drag and painted it on a piece of metal. To me it looks lighter and more towards the pre 43(brown) olive drag. Searching the net, it appears this was "car paint".

Anyone have any information? I'm sort of in a bind as the representative will be coming to the hangar Tuesday and I will be on vacation (leaving tomorrow), so I need to get new information together by tonight really.

I just went thru this with the O-58A, What is the date of manufacture of the aircraft you are painting. Dark Olive Drab # 41 was in use thru December of 1943, ANA 613 was not being used till the Spring of 1944.

The old ANA paint code formulas. are useless for matching colors against the new paints we have today. I have color cards for ANA OD and a WW II fabric sample of Dark Olive Drab # 41.

Poly Fiber has an Olive Drab that is a dead match for Olive Drab # 41. They also have a ground silica flattening agent they can provide, you cannot find it for sale anywhere and the liquid agents do not work on Polyurethane.

Our C47 came off the line in September of 44. So it should have been painted with ANA standard paints, but from what I have read, the original paints were continued to be use until their supply ran out.

I made up sets of paint cards matched to the ANA colors, I can send you a card of the ANA 613 if it would help. The later gray is based on the RAF Sea Gray and is much darker than the early AAF Neutral Gray.

I have a magazine article from an Oct, 1943 Industrial painting magazine on Douglas A/C Painting and metal processes but can't upload a word docx file.
Incoming Alum sheets had primer applied by roller that the sheet ran across. Fab shop had a tank and conveyor along a wall that parts were hung on and dipped in the zinc chromate.

There is a Making of the wartime Piper Cub showing all phases of construction. Interesting that fuselages were chromated by running a bubbling hose of zinc chromate along the tubes.

Paints were referred to by AN-TT-P-XXXX as a callout. Where does ANA come from?

The ANA (Army-Navy-Aircraft) camouflage colors were intended to standardize the numerous standards and colors in to one for use by the Army, Navy and RAF aircraft being built here in the US. The new ANA standard drew heavily on the wartime experience the RAF had gained with regard to effective camouflage colors. The new ANA Sea Gray 603 was supposed to replace the lighter Neutral Gray # 43 but a lot of aircraft continued with the neutral gray well in to 1944.

The correct insignia white and insignia blue remained unchanged and the white is a creamy off white and the blue is very dark. I sent my original sample cards to Air Tech and they matched the colors. The insignia on the O-58 is painted with Air Tech. Several other restorers have also ordered the white and blue from Air Tech for their projects. To my knowledge no one offers the correct insignia white off the shelf.

Well, we got our paint in this week... But I have a question that is not Specific to us, but after looking at paint listing again, I became curious...

What red was used in painting the meatball insignia? Was it bright red ANA 619/ FS31136?
