Good day!
...the absence of an ID cockpit plate on this bird is another book story itself!!
The U.S F4U id cockpit plates & the FAA Royal Navy ID plates were a bit different. They were clearly marked as "B" or with letters & numbers. Included is a pic of a UK F4U-1 "JT-289" c. 1943. It was flown by the late Lt. John D. Wallace, Brunswick NAS c. Dec 1943 before his fatal accident..
KD431 had a cockpit id plate installed on the L/wall just above the left console. For now, it remains missing! Perhaps is still out there somewhere!! Photo via Wix. Data via Drew King.
