and for those that have not read the eugene sledge account "with the old breed:at peleliu...in my opinion one of the finest accounts written by any serviceman in ww2 ...well worth buying the book

The HBO series "Pacific" was based on Sledge's book and Robert Leckie's "Helmet For My Pillow". They both served in the 1st MARDIV and knew each other. The conditions they lived in when not in combat were pretty bad compared to the ETO.

Darn good photos, Mark. I really enjoy seeing what the battlefields look like today. After seeing all the destruction in the black and white photos, they are actually green today.

I was looking through yet another fabulous compilation of shots posted by Mark, thinking wow, that must have really sucked! Possibly as close as one could get to surviving a trip through he!!.
The observation that these men look so young, and yet so old at the same time, is particularly poignant. Their youth and innocence gone for ever.
