Warbird Information Exchange

I am reading a book about the 1936-39 Spanish Civil war and hundreds of aircraft were shot down or lost. Any idea if there is a wreck chasing community in Spain and whether there is anything about in on the net? Took a look but nothing definitive came up.

I find it amazing that the morons were going to scrap this thing in the 1980's who does that the 1950s I could understand but the 80's WTH!

Sadly, the REALLY neat aircraft used in the Spanish civil War were wood...I'm thinking of the various Lockheeds...and gone a long time ago.

I figure if you wanted my opinion on items unrelated to this forum, you'd ask for it.

On this note, if you ever get a chance to see the Spanish Air Force museum at Cuatro Vientos, outside of Madrid, you should. They have tons of cool planes there from this era, albeit most are replicas.

I remember an article written by the late Mark Hanna referring to the I-16 rebuilds in New Zealand and what they were like to fly. He went on to say something along the lines of wanting to recover the wreck of one that had force-landed on the side of a Spanish 'mountain' during the Civil War though I should think that the Spanish AF Museum must have recovered it long ago.

I don't know a lot about Spain other than it is big with lots of mountains and relatively underpopulated areas. I know it was very poor after the conflict and lots of obsolete aircraft were kept in service for many years afterward. Gotta figure that over the course of 3 years of combat and 20 years of further service there are a few wreck site locations known or waiting to be discovered.

Chris, I believe you're thinking of Robs Lamplough's, now under restoration at Meier Motors. That came out of Spain a good 30 years ago. It came off a fire dump IIRC.
