When the two B-24Js Met

Tue Sep 30, 2014 12:30 pm

I've been trying to research and find out any more info on when "All American" and "Joe" were at the same airshow together. Portsmouth, New Hampshire perhaps? Mid Nineties? Anyone have anymore info on this encounter OR better yet, any photos? I remember seeing a picture of both flying formation together on the Fantasy of Flight website, but it's since gone missing.

Manchester, New Hampshire, 1989, New England Escadrille Air Show. It was still "Delectable Doris" then I believe. I got slides somewhere.

Wow, I never knew the two of them had ever flown together. I sure would love to see photos of that!

When I worked at MARC we tried to get DT to let us paint his liberator as the dragon before Collins did but he wouldn't go for it.

Anyone know of photos of the 24 when it flew to Fantasy of flight?

THE last time they flew together was out of Valdosta Georgia... they did a brief formation flight when "All American" and Kermit's airplane formed up on their way to Florida. There is video that Patrick Bunce took from Collings airplane. We used to sell the video but Patrick hasn't converted it to DVD. It was probably shot in 1999 or so.

ARGH, I grew up in Tallahassee, so I was living very close by when that happened and had no idea until this moment. Man, how I wish I could have seen two Libs in the air at once!

And might've flown together in RAF service, probably flew together in Indian Air Force service...

Let's remember that without the Indians managing to make 'demilled' aircraft airworthy and using them until there was an interest in B-24s elsewhere, there'd only be Old 927 ~ sorry, Diamond Lil flying, and we'd be missing the examples mentioned above, plus the Indian Air Force Museum, RAF Museum and Canadian [Museum of Flight and Beyond, Ottawa] wouldn't have examples on show...

Fantastic pics!

The last time I saw AM927 was at Thunder in 2005, before Gary's big makeover. She's actually been to Michigan or nearby states several times since then, but always when I'm out of town. :x

Isn't Kermit's plane down with a corroded wing spar? I remember reading that "Jo" would not fly again. Of course, just about anything is possible in the Warbird World if you have enough time and money, especially money.
