Tomorrow over Sydney and NSW we are expecting up to 50 Tigermoths to be flying in a air race.

I will be taking some photos all going well.

I wonder if any of these Tiger moths (It's two words. I've been chastised for making that typo before) will reach the blistering speeds that were involved in this photo shoot with our Tiger CF-MAD.
Rob Holland said that he could hardly hold position at the staggering 75-80 MPH. :lol:

I know the above because I'm a Gypsy Moth fan, and Tiger Moths are to me what Stearmans are to N3N Jeff. Upside-down engine? Gimme a break. :axe:

I was just gonna let this one ride as a nice little laugh and all, but it has been bugging my inner editor ever since: is 'gipsy' the British spelling of 'gypsy'? It's a well known fact that folks in the UK never had much of a handle on the English language, after all. :hide:

Good question. No it's not a tyre/tire axe/ax item. 'Gipsy' is just a variant (& rarer) spelling of 'Gypsy' in British English. Typical of de Havilland to chose the less conventional option though!

(The term Gipsy is actually a phonetic spelling for 'Egyptian' because that's where they were believed (by the people of late Medieval England) to have come from.)

It is. And yes, de Havilland, small 'd' is correct.

Have any of the Tiger Moths crossed the finish line yet ?

The only plane I have flown that was slower than a Tiger Moth was a kitfox homebuilt.

Matt, that's funnier because it is so true! Tiger Moths were not built for comfort or speed.

In the link I posted to the flight with Rob Holland, Rob said "Man that was slow". He would come up from behind the two Tigers and have to bail out before he over took them. (That guy is such a pro!). It sure was fun though.

One of my favourite comments about the Tiger. "It's a wonderful flying contraption, that is in no danger of replacing the aeroplane" :wink:
