Sounds like it will soon be known as "The National Museum of Aviation and Technology at Historic Willow Run"

Wow.. really snappy name. Not one I'd pick BY FAR but to each his own. Congrats of course on all the fundraising they've done and the hangar acquisition. Really will be exciting to see develop and come to life. But you know that name was made from a commute of too many people.

I like it personally. Easy to shorten to NMAT anyway, kinda like NMUSAF. :)

That is quite a mouthful. I hope the new name serves them well while they get the new museum set up. I still prefer YAM to TNMATHWR.

NMATHWR really rolls right off the tongue!

Yeeeeaaaahhhhh....

That name is about as catchy as a list of ingredients on a bottle of Nyquil. I think I'm just gonna call it "Willow Run." Still can't wait for them to open in their new digs, though. Whatever they call themselves, it'll be great to see them literally rise from the ashes. Can't believe it's been that this month it's been ten years since the fire.

Hard to fit on a hat....but am so happy that they were able to achieve what they did. I heard that some BIG name organizations held back support because of the former name. I hope they will be able to help now.

A couple of thoughts....

1. I liked the YAM better....and I'm from the south, now living up the interstate from YAM. I hope PC-ism didn't rear it's ugly head and they had to change it.

2. What basis is there to state it is now a "National" museum. Does the Fed govt now have some sponsorship role?

They are an affiliate of the Smithsonian. This is why?

It probably has a factor, but I think a lot of it is visibility. If you're able to brand yourself as a "National" something, it can get you better PR visibility. I remember when I attended the announcement of the change of the USAFM's name to NMUSAF that Gen. Jumper said it was part of why they changed the name.

Maybe we should rename this forum the "National Warbird Information Exchange".

Too simple. Let's try "The International Forum of Warbird Information Exchange Forum Message Board Forum Hanger Hangar". :supz:

In the U.S., a National Museum has to be designated as such by an act of Congress, signed into law by the President. There can only be one National Museum per subject. I guess "Aviation and Technology at Historic Willow Run" was not already taken. Congrats to NMATHWR for earning the status.

So there is a Congressional Act somewhere for the name change? That is pretty impressive if true. They could have went with the National Yankee Air Museum and kept it simple.

Edit added: I just read the comments in the article above. The overwhelming consensus is the new name is not a good one. One commenter noted it is too long to put on hats and other small items. I predict it will change down the road based on the comments.

Whenever the subject of overly convoluted and ostentatious "National" museum names comes up, I'm always reminded of this little spot I ran across some years ago in Chattanooga. As you can see, they ran out of room on the sign and had to extend the name onto the back half of the building. I couldn't even get the whole thing in the picture (sadly, we got there right at closing time so we didn't get to see what was inside.)
