Home with a cold and saw this today without interruption for the first time: Loved the SB-17, anyone note the inward-hinged tail compartment door, anyone notice the balsa Race 74 Super Corsair the sleeping little boy has at his seat? Some great time capsule moments showing some of the navaids of the day. And who could miss the many, many scenes later to be parodied in "Airplane!"?

Airplane! is a parody of Zero Hour, even down to using some of the same names

Where did you see it? I've seen it on TCM before but can't find it in the schedule.

Ditto, that. I've seen it on the schedule several times in the past month, but couldn't remember where. My online Comcast guide shows it to be scheduled on their channel 168 RetroTV several times on Jan. 15th. 12:10am, 11:40am and 7:00pm...and if you have Comcast you can watch it On Demand. Good luck!

For those interested, this was a USCG PG-1G out of CGAS San Francisco, replicating a mission undertaken often enough by the USCG PB-1Gs for trans-Pacific piston-powered airliners. A bit more here on the PB-1G scenes in the film:

Airplane! 's plot was basically taken almost word for word from Zero Hour, but there were also scenes from The High and The Mighty that were incorporated as well...the closing scene where all the emergency equipment goes out to the runway are almost dopplegangers for each other, save the Budweiser truck, Cement Mixer and Ice Cream Truck in Airplane!

IIRC where the passenger freaks out and starts screaming "I have to get out of here" was also taken from The High and The Mighty. However, the Jive scene was completely original. "Excuse me stewardess, I speak Jive"...one of the funniest scenes in movie history, especially with Barbara Billingsley's delivery.
