... usually what's in the foreground is neat, but many times what's in the background is even more interesting. I have a big bunch of these photos with some real fastinating stuff off in the distance. Care to see some?

Photo states: El Paso Airport December 17, 1946


SB2C-4 location unknown, looks to be a Mars in the distance?


Interesting F6F-5 Hellcat of NATC with what looks to be a depth charge hanging underneath? Background full of PB4Y's?


Not much to tell about this photo. No info to go on and I can't quite tell what the fourth plane in the far back is. Anyone?


NAS Jacksonville c 1942 with some nice N3N's on floats in the background.


Spring of 1941 Langley Research Center installed an experimental low-drag test panel on the wing of a Douglas B-18. Right behind it is what? It's a P-43 of course. A type that desperately needs to be re-created don't ya think?


Foreground is cool, background is even more cool IMHO.
Kreider-Reisner XC-31 at March Field, Calif., on May 10, 1937. PB-2A (P-30A) in the background.


Large group of Lockheed F-80As bound for Chanute Air Force Base on May 19, 1946. What's the twin-tailed plane way back there? C-something. And a B-25 back there as well.

As always you provide a great selection of aviation photos!!

The second photo (SB2C Helldiver) depicts a Consolidated PB2Y Coronado at anchor in the far distance. The 4-bladed props on the inboard engines and 3-bladed props on the outboard engines are a dead giveaway.

The last photo (P-80 Shooting Star) depicts a Fairchild C-82 in the far distance.

I think the plane in the background of the first photo is the Lockheed Constitution.

Photo 8: The twin tailed ac in the photo with all the P-80s is a C-82.

Photo 10: The neat looking red low wing private plane is a Johnson Rocket...a would be competitor to the Bonanza. Also, notice the BTs among the new Ercoupes and Luscombes. They must have been popular private planes...if you could afford the fuel. BTW: one was always parked in the background on the old "Whirlybirds" TV series.

Photo 13: I think the plane in the background of the Constitution in San Francisco is a Boeing Stratocruiser. Both Pan Am and United flew them out of there.

Seversky XP-41 at Langley for drag reduction abilities testing.


And the Seversky P-35. The Seversky P-35 NACA used in April 1939 for testing as well.



Both look very cool, as well as the P-43.

In the background of the XP-79B photo, you have a Fairchild AT-21 on the right and a Cessna "Bamboo Bomber" on the left. One of our WIX members here in the D/FW area owns an AT-21 resto project... maybe he'll chime in.

Not sure that picture of NAS Olathe is correct. Also I have never mentioned but I love all of these photo threads you do. Such a great way to preserve the past and provide us with hours of entertainment on the computer.
