27th Pursuit

Hello I am new to this forum and have been looking for some information on the 27th Pursuit Squadron, of the 1st pursuit group, from 1936 to 1939. I am interested in pre-war planes and pilots. I have spent hours going thru the web, I have spoke to Wright Pat, 1st Wing Group Historian and AFHRA is on October request, so I would imagine I won't hear anything for a couple of month.

With all the knowledge that I have seen on this forum, maybe you guys can lead me in the right direction.

What we are looking for is a list ship ID numbers that is worn on the fin and wing and a list of aircraft serial numbers for both the P-35's and the P-36's that served in the 27th especially at Selfridge.

There is alot of information out there and pictures on the P-35's with the yellow band and the eagle, I would think the P-36's were painted the same way before they received the experimental camouflage, which there is also a lot of info on.
we would like to confirm some of this information.

Aircraft serial numbers should be available via the AFHRA 'AC, ACR, ACA etc' record cards. All are on microfilm and well worth shelling out the bucks for!

Adding to the poster's info above, while it's a worthy pursuit, you're looking for something that's rather difficult to come by... interwar tie-ups between A/C serial numbers and squadron numbers on USAAC aircraft are notoriously difficult to establish because the number assigned to the aircraft by the squadron frequently would not be recorded on the actual A/C record card. I've been looking to tie up the same info for 8th PG aircraft based here at Langley Field (33rd/35th/36th PS) for some time now, and unless one is fortunate enough to find a shot which captures both the data block on the port side beneath the windscreen AND a section of the airframe with the unit number on it, you're pretty much out of luck.

I'll look and see what I have, but I honestly don't think I've got any matches for you in my files... will check and report back.

Thanks Mark, I have those pictures and from what I can tell the ship ID numbers for the 27th at Selfridge range from 40 to 69, were the P-36's painted the as the P-35' before the camo? I have never seen any pictures other than the camo on the P-36, it would be nice to know.

I'd say yes but that's just an opinion. Not sure what pursuit group this P-36 belonged to.

So according to your numbering sequence for Selfridge, would this P-35 belong to the group as well?



And I'm not quite sure where this P-35 is located or what group.

The P-35' and 36's at Selfridge had "PA" on the tail. The 1st Pursuit Group consisted of the 17th, 27th and 94th Pursuit Squadrons. the airplanes with ID #'s from 70 to I believe the last one is 94, belong to the 94th PS, 40-69 belong to the 27th PS and ?-39 belong to the 17th.

The 17th had an Eagle with a Triangle behind it, the 27th had the eagle with a circle behind it, and the 94th had the indian head.

The P-35 on top belongs to the 27th and the one on the bottom belongs to the 94.

All this stuff I am still learning and I have seen some discrepancies in some of the literature I have read,so I would like to give a little more of a try than a shot from the hip, I appreciate all the input

Well it seems like your doing a good job so far. Keep up the research and the answers will come. This place is as good as any to help you find what your looking for. A lot of smart folks (I'm not one of them ) hang out here from time to time.
