This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

I've used it to make vinyl lettering for some local birds.
If this is what you need I can email you the font.

Contact Steve Atkin at
http://www.warbirdcolour.co.uk/ He might have an idea as to the font.

We tend to make our own fonts if there is enough evidence to go on - obviously some are very close indeed to 'standard' fonts but its the small variations that make the difference.
And yes - if they spelled it HANDEL in period, please keep it that way!

I guess the next question is would this have been a factory marking, military repair depot, field marking or civilian / post military?
Any thoughts?
Also could this have been from Ellis Aircraft? Like the instrument panel...

If it went through an overhaul process then I would say the stenciled markings were applied at that point.
The SNJ-3 went through an O/H in 44. You can tell where they applied Zinc Chromate at that point. It is all the same color and it is everywhere there is a part that was removed. The interior of the wing center section, stress doors, wing root of the outer wings as well in the tail feathers. They also riveted on small dataplates with the O/H info/date.
I would imagine that on the H-19 every component that could be removed was, then inspected, lubed, needed parts replaced or modified and then painted/stenciled. Other than the Ellis Aircraft is their any added dataplates with O/H or mod info? Any stamps of this nature on the transmission or engine?
Those markings wouldn't be factory, the paint seems to be over other paint so it was probably at some kind of overhaul or cleanup. Whether that was during Military service or perhaps during the process of going on the civilian register I don't know.

My personal experience with typefaces is that you can go insane trying to find an exact match to an existing font. Your best bet is to us the MD font, which is very close, and then use a vector illustration program like Illustrator to modify the mismatched letters.

Drew;
That H-19 came from Ellis Technical School in Danielson, CT. I have pics back in 1981 when it was in good shape. The stenciling on the panel is probably from back then.
The copywriter in me says to spell "Handle" correctly, but the historian says to paint it as found! Errors and all!

What stencil font is most likely for USAF ground equipment in Thailand/Vietnam 1971? (Specifically if the guys in the parachute shop were making inspection stencils and the like.)
Also, what is the smallest character height and the tallest for this application?
Thanks!
Ken

I'm sure you guys know about this but, I'll post a link anyway:
http://www.oldwings.nl/content/o0/USAF_ ... _1-1-4.pdfIf "handle" was misspelled from an active duty unit, depot maint, and it flew with it, I say keep it misspelled.
