B-29 tour in Pueblo

Step onto the flight deck of a B-29 bomber in Pueblo tomorrow. The plane is at the Pueblo Airport, and the cockpit will be open to the public for tours from 10 am to 4 pm. It's the type of plane that dropped the atomic bomb in World War II. A former flight engineer will also give a talk. Admission is $6.

It looks like they have done some great work on it, and have it indoors now. Anyone ever visit this museum?

I visited back in '86, but all the aircraft were outdoors and most were rather dilapidated. It seemed to be almost a one-man operation at the time. The guy told me he wanted to restore the B-29 to the point where one engine could be run up..a pretty tall order considering the shape it was in. Looks like they've come a long way since then.

The last time I was there in '03, the B-29 was outside. They have come along ways with her from the first time I was there in '91.

Steve, I stopped in Pueblo last year, I was close to stopping in two days ago, but plans were changed...The B-29 is indeed indoors now....When I was there last, I was given a personal tour and was allowed access to the interior of the complete aircraft....The gentlemanthat gave me the "up-close and personal" was a WWII P-51 Ace...His first name is Vince, forgive me, but I can't recall his last name...for being80-some years old, this guy is a real live-wire, and a patriot in the fullest sense. He donates his time to guide visitors several days a week He was also the inventor of the sturrup system on the F-104 Starfighter...where it hooks up to the pilots boots and reels the feet in when ejecting from the a/c...preventing loss of legs on the canopy...I give this museum a big thumbs up! Top notch people there! This (pueblo) is an ex-B-24 and B-17 base...They have the nose gear works for a B-24 on a test stand and let you operate the controls to raise and lower the gear, pretty neat stuff...Plus a lot other a/c too.....Gary

I was stationed at China Lake in 1976 when they towed this plane out of the desert and parked in at the base of the control tower. I was an Air Traffic Controller 1st Class at the time. We got to watch daily as they worked on her, cleaning, pulling the engines for overhaul, scavenging enough instruments for the engineers station, going through the hydraulics etc. It was really a thrill when they first fired up the engines. On the first attempt to fly her out the nose wheel steering failed just after they entered the taxiway and she ran off into the dirt and took out a couple of our taxiway lights. After some more work they finally got her in the air flying with the landing gear remaining in the down and locked position. They didn't want to take any chance of having the gear not extending again if they retracted it. pop1

Welcome to WIX.

FYI, B-29's have no nosewheel steering. The nosewheel free casters. B-29's steer through the use of differential braking and differential engine power.

I'm not a mechanic so I can't reply to this. All I know is that they lost control and ran off the taxiway and they had to tow it back to the ramp. pop2

This airplane didn't fly out of China Lake. It came out on trucks. The one at March AFB did fly out of there around the mid 70's. It was ferried with the gear down.

Peachy was trucked out around 1972. FiFi flew out in 1971. It's Hawg Wild flew out around 1979. I'm not sure if any others flew out. I'm pretty sure the rest came out in pieces on trucks...

It would be the B-29 at March field 44-61669. Flown out around 1976. There were only 3 to fly out of China lake this one, Hawg Wild, and FIFI.

The B-29 (45-21739) at the Aerospace Museum in Sacheon, South Korea might have flown out. I thought I read an article about it years ago...

Anyone got any updated pictures of the interior/exterior of Peachy...?
