PW R1340 supplemental engine insurance?

Tue Mar 03, 2015 7:36 am

Hello All!

Does any R1340 operator know of a supplemental insurance policy that would cover engine loss? As I understand it a normal owner policy does not cover engine failure where the airframe is not damaged.

For example, a T-6 on downwind has a rough running engine and the pilot lands to discover that the engine has severe damage that requires overhaul. The insurance policy would not cover the overhaul because the hull was not damaged.

Is there a policy for engine restoration in case of catastrophic engine damage that does not result in a hull loss?

Thank much all and fly safe!

Insurance normally covers accident, theft or property damage. Never heard of a policy that covers maintenance issues. Maybe your engine overhauler would sell you a supplemental warranty?

Nope, the only time you could get a free overhaul is if the engine is still under warranty by the overhauling facility, and even then it is normally only for the first 50-100 hours of operation.

Engines are just one big consumable part. It is not a matter of if they will need rebuilt, it is a matter of when; even more so with old radials. So nobody in their right mind would insure it. It is solely the responsibility of the owner to self insure by setting up a separate bank account to pay the money into and to not touch that money unless it is for a maintenance cost. If one cannot afford to do this, then one cannot afford the aircraft.
