I am looking for info for a MIA pilot, Capt. Albert H. Pharr, VMF-216, lost 16 Feb 1944, area of Rabaul, flying out of Piva airstrip , Bougainville, in F4U-1 Bu No. 17991.
Capt Pharr is the Great Uncle of someone I work with,(my Boss) & any details of the mission, how he was lost, or pictures of Capt Pharr would be greatly appreciated. Also would be appreciated any photos of the F4U-1's of VMF-216.
Thanks!

Squadron/Signal Pubs, "F4u Corsair in action" has a couple listed as VMF-216 if that is of any help. I'll dig through and see if that serial pops on any of the images or pics. Tough thing that most pics one can't read the tiny serial #'s. One pic of F4u-1As on Bougainville labeled as February 1944, shows interesting markings with white bars with no blue boarder added to the older circle/star motif. Unfortunately, it doesn't list the unit.

If you go to vmf216.com, Second Tour-Piva war diary, Feb. 16, you'll see as much information that is available
to date. If you've come across anything more in the interim, please let us know.
Thanks,
Bob, Jr.
