The year is correct the location incorrect, one of these photos is used in Balchen's book "Come North with Me". The dog sleds are an additional clue given that I doubt they were traveling by dog sled on Attu.

Your understanding and Jack's caption may both be correct, GilT. You guys do know there is an Attu
Greenland?...an island...tho in googling, I've also seen it referred to as the "Attu region".

Given the average sailor or soldiers knowledge of the largely unfamiliar and uninhabited regions landmarks,
a generality and a date scribbled on the back of a photo should be considered as a possibility.
The longitude/latitudes of the locations are all within close proximity...just some interesting coincidences I
noticed after googling a guess...

Can you imagine how rough that takeoff must have been? I'm sure he had throttles all the way out when he lifted off, too.
