Martin Maryland discovered per June Aeroplane Monthly

The article itself is pretty vague, with no precise location given. It consists of mid and rear fuselage, with wings still attached. The nose section lies on the ground in front. The whole thing looks pretty beaten up, and from what I can tell the tail feathers and cockpit area are missing. No engines either.

It's still an exciting prospect though, I do hope somebody will go to the trouble of saving it.

For those not familiar with the Martin A-22 Maryland Bomber here is a color photo taken at Bolling Field, DC circa 1940. Aircraft appears to be in French markings,

Yup, sleek and swift for the period. One of the "gone but not forgotten's" I'm really happy is now a maybe!

It's great to see an extinct type return and, despite my low opinion of the Maryland's aesthetics, it still gave me a thrill to see it in Classic Wings. Let's hope the stars align and it can be removed and displayed somewhere.

Yes, I have to agree with Zac in that it needs to be retrieved and put on display by either the RAF / RN or the French. After all it was a Maryland of the FAA that spotted the Bismarck making its break (and fateful journey) into the North Atlantic in 1941.

Now if only a Martin Baltimore can be located as well. As both these aircraft operated primarily in the Mediterranean area I am curious as to what lies in the ocean just off the end of Hal Far airfield on Malta.

I think the photo is a US aircraft in temporary camo. While we never used them operationally, the AAF bought a few Marylands for evaluation..mostly because military aircraft had to be "in use" with our forces in order to be sold for export or lend/lease.

The Maryland and Baltimore are two of my favorite WWII types. It'd be fantastic if one could be brought back from extinction!
