CNN just posted this photo from a military parade flyover on April 18th this year. It's kind of ironic seeing 3 of the 4 aircraft Iran is flying as having been designed and built by the hated imperialist dogs of the United States. Sad to see them as the only operator of the F-14 anymore. I miss seeing Tomcats flying.

The good thing though is that so long as they continue to fly them there is always a chance that one might turn up in civvy hands as a warbird :D
There was a story doing the rounds here a few years back that Thunder City (operators of EE Lightnings, Hunters and Buccaneers were talking to them about acquiring one 8)
If only !!

Honestly, I wonder if they really hate us that much, or just our policies...

We're infidels and openly accept things that will get you executed in a gruesome manner in Iran today. So, I'd think it's not only a political thing but a cultural one as well*
We also backed the Shah, someone who isn't universally loved in Iran today.

*A pal of mine was told to show an Iranian group around the University he was on the staff of. First place he walked them by was a gay pride rally. I'm still laughing at his description of their reactions to seeing that, several years after the fact.

Did they turn the 47 into a tanker, or buy it from us like that?

Honestly, I think it's mostly political rhetoric. I'd bet If you talk to most any Iranian they'll tell you that they like Western culture and don't harbor any ill will towards the west. It's just a very vocal minority who happen to be in the driver's seat in Iran making all the noise.

I understand all the US trained Iranian pilots loved it here. My brother worked with many at Williams back in the day....
I'd imagine they're all left the country or have been shot by now. It would be interesting to know if any survived the purges and still serve?

Where'd they get training after we told them to get lost?
The MIGs came with Russian support, I'd imagine, but are there former NATO phantom jocks training them on the F-4s?

I'd image a few US trained nationals trained their replacements on US equipment.
My question was if any US trained pilots still on duty...after all the break was about 35 years ago.

My friends who are brave (?) enough to "work" all around the M. East all say the same thing, that the 2 favorite shows the "Leaders" enjoy the most are "Bay Watch " & " Top Gun" ! pop2

I think a lot of the "tension" is generated by needless arrogance and political games.

Perhaps it's rhetoric on the political level, but on the tactical military level I can tell you firsthand that they have no love for us. I recall being lit up and tracked by fire control radar, screamed at and threatened by ground and naval forces in the NAG/SAG, and my favorite part when we would commit to a Strait of Hormuz transit (about a 30 minute operation where you entered on one end and had to fly a very narrow geographic and altitude track right down the middle so as not to violate sovereign airspace....and you could not deviate course or turn around) they would take one of their P-3's and enter at the opposite direction to play a game of chicken with us. And it was one of the few no-sh*t real world tactical prosecutions when we would track one of their Kilo subs out in the Indian Ocean. It was like a mother bear protecting her cubs. They did NOT want us there.

Back to the airplanes..I'm curious as well. Is the 747 tanker a home-grown Iranian mod or can you order them that way from Boeing?
