Hamilton Skyfest 2015 pictures

Mon Jun 22, 2015 9:50 am

Here are a few pics form the recent 2015 Hamilton Skyfest. These are just a few that threw up on Facebook. I should have more down the road as I process them.

Friday night they did a night run and I was able to get some decent shots:

MAM's Mosquito

VWC's P-51

CWHM's B-25

and for me the neatest one, VWC's and CWHM's Lysanders together:

But the highlight for me was earlier Fir I was given the opportunity to ride in the back of the CWHM's B-25 while we flew in formation with VWC's P-51. One of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.

I was shooting through a plexi window and my batteries died halfway through ( :bandhead2:/> ) and missed som eof the better lighting, so they are not as good as they could be, but here ya go:

Great shots! Do they deliberately wet down the ramp for the "warbirds after dark" event?

Kind of makes me wish that Mossie was black... Great pics, thanks!

Yes. It gives the photos a little more atmosphere. The ramp was very uneven and most of the water ran down around the photographers feet rather than pooling under the aircraft.

Good stuff, Martin_sam_2000! The night shots came out great. And isn't air-to-air shooting a blast?

Yes, we had fun -- that's me in the VWoC Lysander.

We tried getting the 2 of them closer for the night run, but their wings are so long!

And we also did formation photo flights -- one with a Harvard as the photo ship, and one with just the 2 Lysanders.

I don't think that has happened since the 4 Alberta aircraft stopped crop dusting in about 1950!

The opportunity was tremendous here -- not only did you get to ride in a Warbird, but often you were able to do it in formation with another. And that is very rare.

The same thing will happen a number of times this summer between VWoC and CWH. The next event is at Gatineau on June 30/July 01. Then we will have the P-40 and our Harvard at Geneseo. Then Aug 15 in Hamilton again. And finally Sept 19/20 at Gatineau. There will be various combinations of warbirds -- sometimes impromptu, sometimes planned, but the creme-de-la-creme is putting the P-40 and P-51 on the wing of the Lancaster -- you can't do that anywhere else in the world.
