Worked on some HUP-2 parts today

Sun Jun 28, 2015 5:41 pm

Nothing really worth mentioning. But Im usually a self taught type of person and this is the first real day of delving deep into this thing called aircraft restoration. After doing some studying(I already have a work shop and enough tools to make anyone envious) gave my first shot at trying out some new skills. Went really great removing old dzus wing fasteners, straps, drilled out about 100 rivets , reshaped some dented metal, did some cleaning and degreasing of parts, and even started on corrosion correction. Im logging all my work in hopes it will help me gain my A&P. Will just have to get someone to sign off on it for me I guess. So far I am having a blast working on this stuff. One part at a time is my goal. Even though really we worked on 3 parts today!

If it wasn't for my friend Brian, we wouldn't have gotten half of what we got done today. When working on aircraft parts its a must to have several hands to help out. This stuff is long and tedious work.

Working out the rivets was pretty easy. We spent a lot of time removing wing fasteners, and removing the broken straps. I will fab new straps. Should be pretty easy.

The bottom section has been removed and will be used as a guide to fab a new part. Here Im working on cleaning it. It was mostly covered by a thick blanket of old grease. Looks better now. Hey, that's DAY GLO!

Thanks for looking,
Nate

Hi Drew,

That is such a kind offer thank you so much for the interest. I am planning to fabricate them. They are really easy to make.

Thanks,
Nathan

Great stuff Nathan.
Be sure to log all of your time too.
You'd be amazed how far good documentation can go.
I think I recognize your friend Brian from seeing him at Geneseo.

Hope to see you there this year.
Hopefully we'll be arriving Friday with three Moths!

Andy

If anyone is into HUPs , I can recommend the only book that I know of that gives a glimpse of its operation use.
Rescue Pilot, by Dan McKinnon, McGraw Hill, 2002.
McKinnon was a ship-based HUP pilot and it talks about his experiences and rescues in the type from 56-59.

Thank you so much for the history! Some great history with these HUPs.

Something really awesome, there is actual color film of 129989!!!! :supz: When she was aboard USS Saipan during Hurricane relief in the Gulf of Mexico in 1955. Here it is and is the first HUP featured. They even show the pilot! Its funny, my grandpa had those same gloves but he used them for when he mowed the lawn!

Nathan,

Thanks for this thread and I look forward to following your progress. I'm curious...is there evidence of white paint under the international orange? From my understanding, that's how it was supposed to be done.

Yes, there is white under the day glo. But some of these hups had been painted overall light gray scheme before the day glo times. Perhaps they just sprayed day glo over that? I do have other none hup parts that are day glo and there is a white undercoat on those parts. So it's true that generally there was a white undercoat sprayed before international orange.

Thanks,
Nate

As some know I brought tail section home a month ago. Started working on it. Got the rotor hub off and a bunch of broken and rusted parts. Also started to take off some panels that are corroded. Warning: upcoming mug shot might cause extreme eye pain. I should be done with the tail section in about 22.5 years.

Nathan keep me posted and hopefully I can meet you there. Just spoke to Leon yesterday and he's doing good. As soon as you move the fuselage the aircraft behind it may be gone! :drink3:
