Geneseo Airshow

Thu Jul 09, 2015 10:49 am

So??!?!?! Who's going? We'll be there early Friday to take in as much as possible. I may have been a bit harsh in regards to the seemingly shrinking airshow list every year. But I do hope their will be some great surprises.

ALSO - I just happened to discover this. For any of you seasoned travelers to this show, the old Rivera Theater in downtown Geneseo has been restored!

Guess what they'll be playing for a once only 7:30pm showtime on Saturday night?

We just got back from 3 great days at Geneseo. While this year certainly lacked quantity, it by no means lacked quality!

-THREE solid days of sunshine (with little to no humidity) brought out the fly in folks to this airshow in droves. This year had to have had the best turnout in a number of years. Looking down the full parking rows yielded multiple examples of Stearmans, SNJs, L-Birds, Classics, Tiger/Gypsy Moths, CJ-6's and a good turnout of GA arrivals.

- Except for one, all the expected/booked warbirds showed up.

- The flying was as great as ever, and even with the shorter show time slot, everything we expect from years past was fit in. In addition to the headline acts, we got the usual sets of L-birds, SNJs, Stearmans, Classics, Moth's, shown off on the standard racetrack patterns. I was worried this would all have been dropped in the new format. But we got everything we are used to from TGSOT in the 11-3 time slot that we used to get from 10-5. It was a well run machine this year.

- Warbird flying was great. All three Mustangs were flown acro. Greg Shelton's Wildcat not only had his full acro demo, but actually performed a RN Heritage Flight with the Sea Harrier! (just call it a Martlet) Three B-25s, the TBM and Val with Pyro for their set. (Panchito was a surprise guest) Of course the Sea Harrier demo was fantastic.

- With the show wrapped up early at 3pm, there was plenty of time for the pilot's to get up and do some fun flying, and this is the best part of Geneseo. Also it appeared that many rides were sold as witnessed by the multiple comings and goings of those operators who offered. (CAF Buffalo, NWM, BT-13, Stearman etc....) This is always great to see. People not only excited about coming out to the airshow, but more than willing to cough up a good amount of income for a ride.

- The night show was not well attended which was a shame, since it was impressive for those who stayed. After the skydivers, Scooter Yoak went up for his demo just before sunset. The other two Mustangs and Wildcat then launched. They all teamed up for a missing man pass, timed for exactly at sunset. Very moving. They all then returned at dusk and beat up the field a few times followed by Greg's Wildcat Demo. All of this with NO announcing or Music! The RV8 acro act was next followed by a very nice fireworks display.

The only difference to Sunday's show was that the McKenna Mustang left after the Vets salute, leaving the remaining two who made up for it by performing together in a tail chase.

CONS:
NO SHOW was the VWoC P-40 which was sorely missed and one I wanted to see the most. What happened Dave? The rumor mill was that the FAA wouldn't allow a Canadian operator to sell rides here, so they elected not to come. Well I certainly had my $40 in hand for the 10 minute cockpit briefing.

The dinner on Saturday night was lousy. The food was just over an hour late in being put out and was not that great. Go back to the Crew Tent Chicken Dinner on Friday and Steak on Saturday (was on Friday this year and better than it has been) and bring back the Big Band Hangar dance. It was always well attended and more fitting.

Pics and video to follow.

It was a great show and always a great time. Meeting up with friends for albeit only a brief few days and sharing some laughs. Its always too short! And as Eric said, I look forward to Geneseo more than Christmas nowadays! I also missed a bunch of you guys and didn't get a chance to meet you. Next year!

But I also have this small conflict in me every year. Knowing what kind of monolithic airshow Geneseo used to host, I cant help but dream every year, that 150+ warbirds will appear in the valley. Endlessly hoping for the massive shows of old to return. But it seems that isn't in the cards right now. So I'm always slightly perturbed. That doesn't last long once you start to venture out into the field and check out the aircraft, talk with the pilots, and catch up with everybody. There may not be the massive numbers of aircraft at Geneseo nowadays, but the ambiance and magic is still there. So their always is a chance for next year to see the numbers start to rise.

Those are some great shots folks.
Great review by CH2Tdriver. Summed it up nicely.
We had a great trip down and as Chris says, it's so great to catch up with friends, if only briefly.
We had to leave before the waiver on Sunday as we would be home at dark if we left at 17:00.
The Tiger isn't built for comfort or for speed  but it's a heck of a lot of fun! :D

Thanks for posting.

Some beautiful photos there. Is it me or did Geneseo seem a little light on the warbirds this year?

Cheers,
