A2D question(s)

Tue Mar 21, 2006 10:12 am

Hi All,

I think everyone knows I'm kind of goofy about prototypes and limited production craft. The topic of the A2D Skyshark came up, and I realized I really have never seen any decent photos of the Skyshark that is (was?) with Pacific Fighters. Would anyone happen to have some decent, recent photos they could post?

I realize that certain issues exist concerning the powerplant, but does anyone know if there's any thought as to getting this one airborne?

TIA

Dan

I don't remember where but I came across some fairly recent photos of the Skyshark on the net somewhere. From what I recall the aircraft was for sale as Maszula (sp?) didn't think he would get to it in this lifetime.

Saw this aircraft at Chino in the fall of 1992, and took a couple of photos then. It was tucked in between a couple of hangars, so I couldn't get a decent side shot. I'll look for the photos and post them if I find them. Nothing more recent than that, though.

I believe I read somewhere that the torque converter wouldn't handle the engine output, and the contra-rotating prop gearbox also wasn't up to the task. I think that this would be a money pit that you could throw a lot of dollars into without getting anywhere.

Thanks Brandon.

Love the last photo. Imagine looking over your shoulder and seeing this bad boy coming on the taxiway behind you--and you're in his blind spot!

I've heard they were extremely noisey with the counter rotating props and the turbojet combo.....Tom

There is a fairly recent picture of the surviving A2D Skyshark that is with Pacific Fighters at Idaho Falls in the February 2005 issue of Air Classics.
