If you look at that odd shaped dark area under the center of the canopy, it appears to match as well.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get it back to PA, if I am able to win it, as with my job I won't be able to go out and pick it up myself right away... So storage/shipping cost is what is holding me up right now from bidding.
I'm thinking that at minimum I would restored as a cockpit display so that people could sit in it and I would mount it on a trailer to be mobile. It money allows I could eventually get a little more creative.

One thing's for sure, if you're going to have this as a display, you're going to have to invest in flight gear and helmets matching the ones worn in "Top Gun," because like it not, people will be asking for that if you're taking photos of them sitting in it.

I'm waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy ahead of you lol... I would build up the plane a little bit (as in make new wing roots) but lets just say I have a backdrop already planned...

Tyler, the only thing I can recommend as far as handling this thing is a rigging company I used to handle my machinery when we moved here and built our shop. The wife uses them at work for moving machinery and brokering loads around the country. They are not cheap by any means but they are located less than 30 minutes from the auction and they could store it and skid it or crate it and arrange a truck to haul it to you. Give them a call to see if your dream is even possible.
It would help to have weight and dimensions if possible when you call them.

Thanks for the info. I turned to an F-14 page here hopefully to get demensions from someone who hopefully worked on them as well as an approximate weight for that stripped section.
Yeah it's going to come down to shipping/storing costs as to whether or not I can get it or not.

I went to the auction preview today. The starting bid price for the F-14 cockpit is $10,000. They also have the tail section from the MIG-21 that over ran the runway at Reno-Stead 2 years ago with a starting bid of $2,500. On the F-14 they cut the cockpit off and not very cleanly. There is also a hole near the top of the front glass and several holes in the right side glass. The canopy is in good shape but the cockpit is stripped with instrument panels gone. The seat bases are there but no seats.

Yup, by Thursday I had already decided I was not going to peruse it past my first bid as there is still too much uncertanty around actual ownership and the fact that I did not trust the auction company as every day they were changing something about the listing. Plus once it went to 10k, starting bid it was priced out of my reach.

Sad to see things like this. Someone has taken what would have been a great project for a private restorer (or museum) and priced it out of their reach. It sounds like a busted up mess. Someone with a passion might pay a couple hundred for a fun, long term project. Heck, 10K is a drop in the bucket compared to what it would cost to restore it properly, it is silly to expect someone to start at 10k+ just to get to "point A". A museum might like it as a donation. Now, it sounds like it'll just go to waste. :/
