Road trip to see some Aircraft

Sat Mar 25, 2006 10:05 pm

Scott and I took a drive down to Long Island and meet up with PatM to check out the Cradle of Aviation Museum and the American Air Power Museum. It was a great time and had some very funny highlights that are best not shared, to protect the non-innocent (which for the record had nothing to do with the three of us). We also had a pretty good lunch at the 56th Airwing restaurant (I think that what it was??). Which had a plastic P-40, P-47 and Corsair. The funny thing was there was a Faro-cat living in the P-47 which could be seen sunning itself in the cockpit area. The waiter told us that it enters in and out the tail wheel bay and runs over to the dumpster for food.

Special thanks to Pat for a great tour of the area and history of the are and Lunch.

If you have not visited either museum they are worth the trip. They have nice displays and a good selection of Naval Aircraft and Long Island Aircraft (Republic and Grumman). The Museums are about 30 minutes apart. But Scott can fill in some more details about that.

Also I asked about the Buffalo Reproductions being made. There are 2 being made and one should be staying at the museum and one will be shipped over to Denmark. They did not give a timetable that the work should be done. We were told that if you go the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Wednesday you can get a tour of the restoration area which you can see the Buffalo’s and the OV-1 being worked on.

Here are a couple shots.

That shot of the P-40 is amazing. It almost looks like a painting. Very well done, and thanks for sharing.

Cheers,
Richard

Hmmm,

I see Jimmy V's seats are still getting some good use on the C-47.
Any word on the progress to Bob Baranaskus' P-40?

Shannon and I were in New London last night after a day at Mohegan Sun on Saturday.

Talked to Bob on Friday and the P-40 is in NJ getting work done to her... presuming repairs from the "incident". P-51 is in FL getting her annual.

I posted a few more shots. He is one when I got on the wrong side of Scott after almost 4 hours in the car together.
