I took a bunch of photos at Vought of their Cutlass project. It should be in one of the Vought Retirees threads if someone wants to look it up and link to the thread.

Has anyone found out what happened to the F7U cockpit that belonged to Earl Reinert?

Oddly the only information I've ever seen on that airplane is on Wikipedia. No idea on the veracity.
F7U-3 BuNo 129622
Ex VA-12 aircraft crash-landed at NAS Glenview and was disected and sold for its engines. Forward fuselage was part of Earl Reinarts collection in Mundelein, Il, while the rest of the aircraft went to J-46 dragster builder Fred Sibley. Its componants were reunited and are currently in the collection of noted F7U historian Al Casby of Phoenix, AZ.
Can anyone confirm this?
Jim

Yup Yup, the ID of these two machines are not in question, still working on the third.

Regarding BuNo: 129565 - I believe this aircraft is the one that was formerly on display (and not maintained very well) during the 1980's, at the former Olathe Naval Air Station (now New Century Air Center), near Olathe, KS, and about 10 miles from Lenexa, KS. Around 2001(?), it was replaced with 3 newer vintage aircraft, and the curator of the now defunct base museum told me that the base received the 3 newer aircraft in exchange for the F7U-3 Cutlass, which was to be restored. There are some interesting photos of the restoration project on this aircraft at the USS Midway museum web site.

There was a Cutlass and Skyray on poles at the corner of Old 56 and Harrison in Olathe about five miles from the old NAS. Not sure when they were brought down, but it has been some time ago. I'd like to know where the Skyray went.

As editor of the Scramble US Navy database I try to update our F7 list.
Has anyone found a Vought construction number plate on a Cutlass since none info is available on the web about construction numbers...
Thanks in advance!

Melchior

Al,
Thanks for your reply.
You still have 129622 within your collection?
For now most info about individual aircraft is to be found at
http://www.millionmonkeytheater.com/F7U.html and off course the Scramble database.
But what I'm looking for is info as stated on the Vought id plate (maybe a picture?), probably containing the BuNo, acceptance date and hopefully the Vought id number.
I could not retrieve a single Vought id number so far.
Many thanks in advance!

Vought did not use any fancy numbering system with their Cutlass production, nor other types as well.
Each model was numbered 1 through the end of the contract. See the attached chart:
