B-29 Tail data needed for identification - HELP

Ok! New data just in. This is for B-29A-35-BN 44-61535, Craft Number 11012, produced at Boeing, Renton Washington, Delivered March 31st 1945, "Raz'N H E L L" at the Castle Air Museum in California.
NOTE: Per the Castle Air Museum, the aircraft on display painted as "Raz'N H E L L" was built from three aircraft for display at the museum: Tail B-29A-35-BN 44-61535 (original Raz'N H E L L), Wings B-29-60-BA 44-84084 (Bell, Atlanta Georgia) and Fuselage B-29-75-BW 44-70064 (Boeing, Wichita Kansas). BTW, the forum does not allow the word "H E L L" it automatically turns it into the word "heck", so I added spaces to the word.

B-29A-35-BN 44-61535 was the 327th B-29A built at Boeing, Renton Washington. The aircraft on display has a Tail Enclosure serial number of 1212. This does not fit with the production data for B-29A-35-BN 44-61535.
BUT: B-29-75-BW 44-70064, Craft Number 10896, delivered April 20th 1945, was the 1200th B-29 produced at Boeing, Wichita Kansas under the 75th Block of production:
Craft Number 10837 B-29-75-BW 44-70005 to Craft Number 10936 B-29-75-BW 44-70104 = (1,240 B-29's produced, total, at this point in production at Boeing Wichita).

So, this fits perfectly with my theory that the Tail Unit or Serial Number is the linear production number of the tail at the factory! B-29-75-BW 44-70064 (painted as Raz'N H E L L), the 1,200th B-29 produced at Boeing, Wichita Kansas has a Tail Enclosure Serial Number of 1212!! Perfect!

I see you've had some other -992's so it could have very well been that also. That was the only digit I had any real trouble deciphering.

Thanks for getting the data for me! The part number is definitely 3-14335-992. That first "9" does kinda look like a "0" but if you look closely at the photo you took, there is a little tail at the bottom. This is consistent with the data obtained from B-29-90-BW 44-87779 "Legal Eagle II" at the South Dakota Air and Space Museum.

So your information is VERY exciting. It proves that a 3-14335-992 part number was used at Boeing, Wichita between Block 75 and Block 90 of production.

Thanks for getting the data for me! The part number is definitely 3-14335-992. The plate was a mess and took an hour to clean before I could try and read it. I was hoping to get the numbers without having to pull the plate, as it was a bear to read up in the plane. More B-29 tail data is coming in! This time for B-29A-60-BN 44-62022, Craft Number 11499, produced at Boeing Renton Washington, "Peachy", Pueblo Weibrod Aircraft Museum, Colorado. Recovered from China Lake.
Note: Per the Pueblo Weibrod Aircraft Museum, the tail on their aircraft, as it is displayed, IS NOT the original tail, but they still have the original tail in their collection. The original tail was too far damaged, so they replaced it.

B-29A-60-BN 44-62022 was the 813th B-29A Boeing, Renton Washington during the 60th Block of production:
Craft Number 11487 B-29A-60-BN 44-62010 to Craft Number 11586 B-29A-60-BN 44-62109 (900 B-29A's produced, total, at this point in production at Boeing, Renton Washington).

The tail currently mounted on B-29A-60-BN 44-62022 "Peachy" is marked ASSY 3-14335-13 UNIT 940 (not her original tail), photo taken February 19th 2015:

So, B-29A-60-BN 44-62022 "Peachy" was the 813th B-29A Boeing, Renton Washington and her original Tail Enclosure is ASSY 3-14335-13 UNIT 813. The linear production UNIT number for her tail IS the linear production number of the aircraft. Perfect!

As for the tail currently mounted on the B-29A-60-BN 44-62022 "Peachy", ASSY 3-14335-13 UNIT 940, this tail is probably from a B-29A that was produced in the Block 65 of Boeing, Renton Washington.

I am going to continue to try to document the Tail Enclosures of all of the B-29's and B-29A's to further my research and document it right here to help B-29 history continue.

It is time to resurrect this thread with some recent findings to prove the identification of the “Silver” B-29 tail in my collection.
The purpose of this thread was to document and identify the B-29 Tail Enclosure Unit Numbers to prove that they can be used to identify the history of the exact B-29 that they went to. The findings in this thread have been very fun to unravel and it has proven that the Assembly (part) number and Unit Number do in fact directly correlate to linear production of the tail enclosure at the two Boeing B-29 Factories. The the UNIT NUMBER is in fact the linear production number of the B-29 Tail Assembly.

First, I have to document some known data, before I come to the conclusion of my recent findings.

1119 B-29A's were built at Boeing's plant at Renton, Washington

Tail Enclosure Part ASSY 3-14335-13 UNIT 813 was found on B-29A-60-BN 44-62022 “Peachy”, Craft Number 11499 (Pueblo Weibrod Aircraft Museum, Colorado). This was the 813th linearly produced B-29A Boeing, Renton Washington.

So now for the conclusion: The “Silver” Tail Enclosure in my collection is marked: ASSY 3-14335-13 UNIT 998, with all of these finding in this thread, this tail should have been built in the last part of the Boeing, Renton Production Block 65. I had the aircraft data card pulled from the Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell AFB, Alabama for C/N 11685 B-29A-65-BN 44-62208 the 999th B-29A produced at Boeing, Renton - which fit closely to which aircraft could have come from. And this is the service history of the aircraft:
Manufactured by Boeing Aircraft, Renton WA, accepted August 31st 1945 and delivered to the USAAF on September 4th 1945.
Sep 1945 - To Oklahoma Air Depot, Tinker AAF OK

I now comfortably believe that this “Silver” tail belongs to B-29A-65-BN 44-62208 “Miss Liberty Belle”, which saw service in the Korean War with the 92nd Bomb Group, 326th Bomb Squadron, 307th Bomb Wing and was converted to a TB-29A in April 1955 with final disposition by the U.S. Navy in November 1956.

The Assembly Number with -13 (dash13) appears to have only been used on B-29A's built at Boeing's plant at Renton, Washington plant. This tail would have been installed on a B-29A in the Renton Block 35 of production:
C/N 10987 B-29A-35-BN 44-61510 to C/N 11086 B-29A-35-BN 44-61609

Linearly the 335th B-29A built at Boeing, Renton was C/N 11022 B-29A-35-BN 44-61545.

So, giving a plus one/minus one approach in production, this tail could have been delivered on one of these B-29A's:
B-29A-35-BN 44-61544 Assigned to 611BU, Off Inventory 7/14/1954 Salvaged at Davis-Monthan
B-29A-35-BN 44-61545 Assigned to 4141BU, Off Inventory 9/15/1953 Reclaimed Pyote

B-29A-60-BN 44-62070 C/N 11547 “Fifi”, was roughly the 860th B-29A produced at Boeing, Renton. Currently owned by the Commemorative Air Museum, Dallas Texas. Data collected June 4th 2016.

It's been a while since I have updated this thread, but I have new data to add. This tail data is from Boeing B-29-70-BW 44-69972, known as "Doc". I was able to take the following photos, which are consistent with late-war B-29's produced at Boeing, Wichita (see B-29-75-BW 44-70064, Craft Number 10896, painted as "Raz'N H E L L") . The tail data stamping for B-29-70-BW 44-69972, known as "Doc" was moved from the top of the frame, just before the tail turret enclosure pressure door, to a data plate located to the aircraft's lower starboard side (viewers, lower left), similar to Martin produced aircraft, which also used a data plate, but the placement is slightly higher and did not stamp the Assembly number on the top of the frame. Unfortunately, the data plate is obscured from any markings due to oxidation, but the placement is important non-the-less for B-29 tail enclosure documentation and identification.
