Mustangs on the Radio

I was on my way into Cincinnati today around 3pm eastern, and heard N1451D flying south. I know who owns it, and knew which airplane it was, but was not sure if the owner was flying, so I did not say anything. He was at 3500 feet, and was cleared direct to Gatlenburg, Tennessee. As a side note, the guy I was flying with heard the call sign, Mustang 51D, and I said I know that airplane. He said what kind of airplane is it. I told him a mustang, and he said what's that. Sad to fly planes for a living and not know what a legendary airplane is! Anyone know if Mr. Davis (or someone else flying his plane) is going to the airshow that was pre Sun-n-Fun at the TAM?

Along similar lines, I was getting the ground portion of a BFR
finished up a few years ago when the 20-something year old
CFI giving me that particular BFR noticed a buddy of mine's
'53 Cessna 180 taxi up to the pumps.

The CFI said "That's a cool airplane... What kind of airplane is that?"

Words failed me....

How do you fly for several hundred hours, go through the private,
instrument, commercial and CFI (in your case I'm assuming up
through ATP) and perhaps attend an airshow or two, read a few aviation
magazines, surf the web now and then for aviation content and not
know what a Mustang is? (or even a Cessna 180...???!!!).

I was on a long final into Charlie Brown Field (FTY) in Atlanta several years ago, and the tower cleared two Mustangs for a dual take-off directly in front of me. WOOOOOO ! What a sight.

Ah now you know how a 15 year old feels when he cant talk about warbirds with his friends. Your friends dont know what your talking about. Your girl friend thinks your weird. And your parents ask you why bother.

I think 90% of us can relate too this. Until I found the WIX I felt along. My wife thought I was the only one with this "problem", now she knows there are lots of us out there. WIX jsut has allowed us to mass together from time to time and our wives and girlfriends (not both I hope) can have thier own support group.

Maybe the WIX Widows would be a good theme, instead of a them under a B-25 use a P-61. They'll miss the joke but we'll all smile.

Speaking of wives/girlfriends not understanding... I finally made my first trip to Reno in '04. After 3 wonderful days I managed to burn through 11 rolls of film, which I didn't think was out of line.
2 months later she ends our relationship. No joke...one of the reasons she gave for ending it all? I take too many pictures of airplanes, and not enough of us! "Who takes 11 rolls of just airplanes?"

I do!
The girlfriend is long gone...but I managed to fill up those frames that used to hold pictures of her. Any guesses with what?!

I just stumbled across the WIX a few months ago...and man am I glad I have. Thanks to everyone for sharing in the passion.

Just do what I'll bet a lot of us do - you have one group of friends at school, another group of airplane friends (like here) and other groups for your other interests. Maybe the different groups won't have anything in common, but you'll end up with a lot more friends!
It will be better next year when you get your driver's license - that'll get you where you have to go to get your pilot's license .

M-a-n-y years ago, my wife "intervened" one day when I was up to my proverbial eyeballs in work-related stress and said "You really need a hobby". Interesting choice of words...and I "occasionally" remind her of them.

So...in the "Be Careful What You Wish For" Department...

Years pass along and about 1990 I started traveling with my Dad, taking the odd picture or two (usually more) of various & sundry aircraft, mostly warbirds. Our 1st summer at Oshkosh I burned through 17 rolls of film pretty darn quick and only stopped because I had run out of "discretionary" funds for photos & processing. By 1994 I had stopped counting just how many warbirds photos I had taken. Need I go on?

My wife & I have an understanding about each other's interests that are not mutual interests. It has worked for 34+ years. If there is a moral to this story it is this: If you can't find a signifigant other who really "likes" warbirds, find one that really likes you and thinks its OK to like warbirds.

Well, it's true, we weren't meant to be. Atleast this girl I'm seeing now understands the love I have for aviation. Heck, she'll even attend airshows! Of course the dozen or so pictures in my living room kinda gave that away.

What I've learned is that not everyone understands or cares. There are people I know who have no clue I'm even a pilot. I do have my circle of friends who I can talk warbirds or airplanes in general with, but I have other friends I talk about different things with. Just kinda the way it is.

Like it's been said...if you can't find a signifigant other to share your interests with, find one who will support you.

I was thrilled to stumble across this forum, like several of you, I felt alone with my warbird fascination. I knew I wasnt alone...but I didnt have anyone to talk to about it.

My friends and family are tolerant of my hobby, and will occasionally humor me by asking questions, lol.

My girlfriend has also been tolerant of my obsessions...er um hobbies (Planes, Firebirds, Models, Trains, etc...)

Perfect example: I am at my girlfriends dorm...their is a large Toga party going on...But the History Channel is showing a show about the Tirpitz...I would be happy to just sit here and watch it! Im not crazy...I know it...lol
