Strategic Air & Space Museum "WARNING IMAGE HEAVY"

Wed Feb 24, 2016 11:57 pm

Took a trip out to the Strategic Air & Space Museum in Ashland, NE today. Haven't been out there in a while and was surprised to see the B-1A is now outside and the B-29TB has taken it's place since moving out of the restoration hangar. Enjoy the pics!

Whats this, an after hours tour of the place?

Haha no. Turns out if you go at 3 o'clock on a Wednesday you pretty much have the run of the place :D
And yes, it's very dark in there. Had my speedlight with me but refrained from using it. Shiny aircraft, reflections, you can imagine... :?

Wow, thank you!

Looks like those years outside did no favors on the B-52 and B-58 especially.

Any sign of the Vulcan?

Hello 'dropctune'

I might suggest that you load this photo set to the "Photo Gallery" subsection of this website. That way we will all have easy access to your nice images.

Love the restoration they did on the B-29 interior. I was a little disappointed they decided to paint (yikes!) the exterior. Great pictures...

I was there last Veteran's Day. I would give it an A+. The placement of the aircraft was well thought out. For example the XF-85 parasite fighter is placed near the bombay of the B-36. Meanwhile the other aircraft used in bombay launches and recoveries, the Republic F-84 "flies" overhead. Also the 1945 North American B-45 Tornado is close to the NAA B-25J and B-25 cutout. It's possible to look at both designs , built less than five years apart and marvel at the leap in technology.
Having never flown or been inside a B-25, the cut out was very interesting to study. It seemed to be all original. The B-29 and it's spin off the C-97 are parked in the same hangar close to each other. They seemed to have al the bombers. After leaving, I had to take a moment to think of anything they didn't have. (B-24, B-26, F-82 twin mustang, etc.) The Douglas A-26 , which are actually rare to see in a museum looked really good. Can't remember the last time I saw an A-26 at a museum and parked inside.
Last, my only suggestion is I would like to see them get some prisoners on work detail from the Sheriff's office and get the polishing on the B-52 , etc. finished.

A great set of photos, thanks. We were there a few years back. They have a very nice collection and they have done a fine job restoring the aircraft.

I Google Map'ed the place to see where it is, and saw the Vulcan out by the B-1.

One more great big THANK YOU for posting this! :supz:

I have never understood why the B-1A wasn't kept in it's original overall white paint scheme, as it was while it was at WP.
