Yanks Air Museum's P-40 to fly

Mon Mar 14, 2016 4:07 pm

Yanks Air Museum posted an event on Facebook to announce the return of their P-40 to the air:
When: Saturday September 17th at Noon
Yanks' WWII P-40 Warhawk will take to the skies after nearly 60 years. The Yanks crew has been meticulously preparing the 75 year old aircraft for flight with great anticipation.

Much of the work has now been completed such as: a complete engine rebuild (Yancy Enterprises), main landing gear overhaul, tail wheel overhaul and a major IRAN inspection just to name a few.

Opportunities to meet and greet the pilot and a free P-40 souvenir gift will be given to the first 300 admissions. Yanks members receive free admission.

*Special thanks to Flying Tigers Aviation who are dedicated supporters of our cause and have graciously donated fuel towards this flight!

POF

Hope this is the beginning of a new trend with Yanks. Overhauling one aircraft a year for flight.

That's really cool, it's always great to see another P-40 in the air! But the best news by far must be that it's wearing a sharkmouth, because God knows there aren't enough P-40s wearing sharkmouths. :)

But seriously, it is great to see another Warhawk getting ready to fly. On that topic, does anyone know the disposition of the P-40 N740RB of the late, great Bob Baranaskas? My understanding is that it was recovered not long after his sad accident in April 2009, but I don't recall hearing whether Chris and the family planned to rebuild it.

Cheers,

Lynn

According to the NTSB report, the wreckage wasn't recovered at the time, and was never examined. No idea if they eventually did or not.

Yep, always the potential that Tony Banta's P-40 might be there, and/or any of the Paul family's P-40's. Back in 2005, at the Planes of Fame Airshow, they had four P-40's flying together (POF, Banta, Paul(x2)) - the same amount they had flying together at Geneseo in 2008.

Speaking of shark mouths on P-40's, the only one I think really looks right (for the E's and later models flying) is Jerry Yagen's (my absolute favorite), but they did of course come in all styles during the war (as clearly evident in period photos). The shark mouth on Bob Baranaskas' P-40E looked great too, as did the shark mouth on Doc Anderson's P-40E (its old Geneseo-days paint scheme). Jim Smith's P-40E looks really cool too, with a shark mouth that looks a lot like the one that was on Baranaskas' P-40.

While I imagine that it is quite stylized and probably not particularly authentic I have always liked the mouth on John Paul's P-40E.

And one of mine of the Yanks' P-40E from a couple of years ago.
