F-117's today

Mon Mar 14, 2016 3:15 pm

I know they have not been in the air force's inventory for a number of years now. Are they all parked at Davis Monthan/boneyard or have they been scrapped?

When the Stinkbugs were retired about eight years ago they did not go to D-M. I believe they went to Tonopah, NV for storage where a couple were salvaged to test a way to destroy them.

A couple of F-117's are spotted flying at Tonopah every now and then, probably for radar testing/calibration.

Although there has been much speculation as to what the "retired" F-117's are up to, it could be as simple as ensuring the fleet is still kept up to certain standard, known as 1000 storage as this article suggests: http://intercepts.defensenews.com/2014/ ... ll-flying/

Gotta keep a few of them flying to ensure they are still up to snuff.

Agree that they would be useful for radar test/calibration as well as they are a known commodity.

Saw pics on the net where they were all scrapped... same cruncher machine that ate all the Tomcats. They are not all stored somewhere.

A couple of airframes were scrapped, but the majority are in cocooned storage in a hangar at Tonopah. There is a video on YouTube of one flying through the Nellis range after they were retired.

Edit - Here is a link with photos of the storage and the YouTube of the one caught flying on the Nellis Range: http://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/why-is ... 1544383008
