... which doesn't seem to work all that well in this photo. I recall seeing another photo of this particular B-17 with no national markings, insignias etc.

Turns out upon further review it's this Boeing Y1B-17 with camouflaged paint scheme, assigned to the 20th Bomb Squadron, 2nd Bomb Group, based at Langley Field, Virginia.

A slightly better quality photo. This was a type of War Games camo application pre-war.

Quite a few types sported special "War games" temporary colors...B-18s, P-36s and observation types come to mind.

There are color profiles of some in books.
