I saw on Facebook within the last 2 weeks a story about this museum getting a P-51. Didnt the museum already have a P-51 or I'm I thinking about a different museum?

They replaced the fiberglass replica with a real one. The replica I believe has since gone to the CAF. Now all I'm waiting for is the Corsair to be taken down and corrected.

Here is the link to the company that built it...I doubt there is much provenance in it.

Unfortunately I don't think it'll ever be a flyer,

But looks good cosmetically.

This used to be the late Pony Maples' P-51D, the one he had in his house (consisting of fuselage, tail surfaces, engine, and engine mounts). It had been offered for sale as a potential restoration to airworthy project, three years ago, through Courtesy Aircraft Sales. Supposedly a lot of good parts went into the build when Pony Maples had it put together - the fuselage/tail surfaces had been built at Tri-State Aviation (to full airworthy standard, I assume). The aircraft had the serial number 44-72254 attached to it (at some point after the fuselage/tail was built up). As I recall, the National WWII Museum sold the original engine that came with the project to help fund the building of wings for it.

It also stole a scene in Steven Spielberg’s 1987 movie “Empire of the Sun,” when a young Christine Bale watched a Mustang strafe a Japanese camp and yelled “P-51, the Cadillac of the sky!”
