This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

When starting this this thread I in NO way intended to (re)start this old flame war.
I only meant to exchange information....
Let's let sleeping dogs lie.
If the old name means that much to you buy or trade for the CASA and start a new group of Confederates. [/b]

It is amazing that one has to go to New Zealand to find one of the few that understands the meaning of the "C" word.
How can we teach history to people that do not even understand the founding of our country. Anybody remember the Articles of Confederation, long before the problem between the North and South.
For the non members the reason I brought this up is that we have been told by Midland to erase the C word from all that we do. Throw away our old uniforms and patches. Not good enough to just officially change our name.
What no one told us is how do you get the general public to erase it from their memory. Burn all the books, movies etc.?

In the context of the "C" word, it brings another PC question: Should WW2 axis aircraft be restored/repainted with the Swastika?
Thx,

Yes, I knew it was time for the "paint" subject to come back up.
Just joking! Ok, so maybe I'm not.

I know I'm stepping on a landmine here but, it seems like the CAF is similar to many large corporations - there are decisions made that really irk many people but the leadership is trying to do the right thing in the stated interest of the business/organization. I am not a member of the CAF - heaven willing someday I have the budget to afford it I may very well join, so you know where I am coming from.
It seems to me that if corporate sponsorship dollars were no big deal there would be CAF and Collins Foundations all over. The fact is that there are precious few big corporations that actually ante up each year for warbirds. I guess what I am getting at is that if I owed 30+ operational planes and was upfronting the bill for insurance alone you are dreaming if I wouldn't rename my collection if a big donor came along and made a reasonable "suggestion". I feel somewhat comfortable in saying this as with ICAS it took a lot of scratching and clawing to get Dr Pepper to get into a corporate airshow sponsorship. They may have sentimental love of planes but when it comes to money it is a whole different story.
I don't know much about the management of the CAF's airplanes and the wheeling and dealing that goes on BUT they must be doing something right as they are still around and flying every year; which is a lot more than can be said for other collections of aircraft (airzoo is a sad example).

Hi Everyone,
A portion of several of the previous posts on PC within the CAF has been
taken out of context. No one is suggesting to forget the past Confederate
Airsho's or history of the organization. Simply put Mr. John Lage of whom is the directory of Marketing of the CAF is requesting the CAF members help the organization move forward.
Members know where this is coming from because they receive The Dispatch (the CAF Magazine) in which Mr. Lage spells out possible strategy's for the CAF to move up to the next level in revenue and membership. There is correlation between the CAF and other large
organizations that have prospered. With his leadership we are beginning to see the potential there. For more information on the facts, join, receive the literature and let your voice be heard.

To be honest, this seems to be a lot of hot air about nothing. A name is just a name: BFD, get over it!
Whether it's the Confederate Air Force, or the Commemorative Air Force, they are still doing the same thing: preserving an important part of our collective history and sharing it with all of us. This is a really critical task if the sacrifices of previous generations are to be kept alive in the minds of future generations. The CAF, despite all of the difficulties inherent in any large organization, has done an exceptionally fine job with regards to preserving the legacy of the "greatest generation". They are now starting to do the same thing for following sons and daughters in Korea, Vietnam, and I would presume at some point Desert Storm. This is an exceptionally difficult task, and yes, there have been mis-steps along the way, but no one is perfect!
Instead of ranting about something as stupid and purile as a name, we should be asking them "How can we help", and "What can I do". I know that many of us on this forum are already doing just that, whether inside the CAF, or outside in independent organizations.
It's time we put this issue to bed. The name is not going to change back to "Confederate Air Force", no matter how much grumbling goes on. Not only would it be embarassing to change back after such a commotion created by the change in the first place, but it would also cost several hundred thousand dollars, or more, to do it (in terms of all the logos, merchandice, etc. which would have to be thrown away). Surely it would not make sense to go through all of that again in a hurry. The dollars would make more sense going into putting another aircraft back in the air.
So stop your bitchin' and start pitchin' in.
Cheers,
Richard

When one of these "big" corporate sponsors shows up and the membership can quit paying the surcharge to keep the organization afloat I will probably change my mind and see the big picture. Till then I will keep a jaundised eye on things.

As far as I am concerned, this is a dead issue. Rohr, GET OVER YOURSELF. The name is changed, I voted for it, it needed to happen TEN years before it did. As I have said before, even Lloyd Nolen agreed the name needed to change.
