What are the odds that the T-Birds and the Angels would both have accidents today.
The T-Bird pilot got out, no word yet on the Blue Angel...

Doesn't sound good in Tennessee. Hope and prayers for the pilot.

A pal of mine works on the other end of that field in TN and saw the whole thing occur, from less than a mile away. I got a text minutes after it happened.
No word on the pilot yet. Hope he/she got out okay.

Rough day for our military. I also see in the Ft Hood area 3 soldiers were killed and others are missing. That may have been flood related?

Both the Thunderbird and the Blue Angel were #6 on the team, crazy coincidence #2...

The press in Seattle are all wetting their collective pants at the idea that the appearance at SeaFair in August might be cancelled from this.

The BA's ares supposed to be in our town next month. After thinking about it for a bit.....I may be a little surprised if they CX'd the show. Obviously I do not know what their Class A protocol is but I'm thinking unless there was an unforeseen, fleet-wide issue with the airframes, they would want their show to keep moving forward. Someone here may have the answer???

Very tragic. As far as within season replacements, F-16 or F/A-18 demonstration airframes are relatively straightforward with a spare sometimes on tap at home base (or use the two seater for a show or two). Generating a "new" airframe can take weeks: sourcing, demil, smoke systems, make some adjustments and respray.

Pilot replacements are much tougher, with moving up the narrator, or tapping a previous season veteran as the usual route. At this stage in the season, I do not think there are next year trainees at the squadron yet. It will take some time for the BA to be back up to a full show. There can be 4 ship shows in the interim.

Deepest regards.

In 1985 after the two solo's collided at the Niagara Falls NY show, only a week later I was at the Dayton Airshow and they put on a 5 ship show.

In 2007 #6 crashed because of GLOC on the rejoin. Soon after LCDR Davis’ crash, the Blue Angels began performing a five-jet demonstration. The squadron called back former Blue Angel, LCDR Craig Olson, to fill the opposing solo position. He began performing after practicing with the team for a few weeks. LCDR Olson had previously served with the squadron from 2003 to 2005, during which time he flew both solo positions. I imagine the same will happen this year.

It's been a tough week. This years Jones Beach Airshow was the best one since 2012, and included the Blues, Snowbirds and Breitling team. In addition the return of the USAF single ship (F-16) demo and HF with the F-35. That great show was marred by the loss of Bill Gordon and the AAM's P-47 on Friday night. I decided to not video the Blues performance, and instead just plugged in my earbuds to my scanner and heard all the coms. The solos were particularly chatty that day and were clearly having a good time. It was hard to tell which voice was which, but it's sad to think I was listening to the last performance of one of them. :( It just struck me how good the reception was that day that I picked up every transmission clearly. On Saturday #5 toward the end of the show said he had a "bleed valve" problem and had to RTB. They finished the show as a 5 ship and on Sunday used #7 as a replacement, with #5 still at Republic . I also heard one of the solos in conversation after a maneuver says "I blacked out on that one", which got my attention. Both of those things were on my mind when I heard of the crash.

A GoFundMe account has been set up on the family's behalf. They are halfway to the goal in just over 1 days time.

Am very upset by this news, condolences to family, friends and teammates.
Was going to look for video but 2nd thought, don't want to see it. Nephew told me it was pretty much smoke coming from a treeline. Haven't been able to find many details, heard it happened at/near takeoff and he veered away from a residential area and rode it into the ground.
Engine failure ? Birdstrike ? Haven't heard yet.
I would anticipate they will be down 3-4 shows to allow time for grief and to get replacement pilot/aircraft up to speed.

Saw them 4 days in a row last year at Ypsi, right at the end of the runway and was under them for 6 takeoffs and 5 landings, unforgettable and of course the deceased was there in #6, same aircraft and pilot I presume.
Here is their Sunday departure takeoff for anyone interested. [Sun Aug 30, 2015]
