I'm looking for books covering aircraft powerplants (pre-1965 powerplants) and also for aircraft armament used from 1914-1965. Anybody have any suggestions on books to look for?

Hi Scott

I have a couple of titles for you:

A History of Aircraft Piston Engine by Herschel H. Smith ISBN 0-89745-079-5 240 pages. Cover from pre-aviation to the 50s and all around the world.

Major Piston Aero Engines of World War II by Victor Bingham ISBN 1-84037-012-2 185 pages. Cover allied and axis big piston engine of WW2. Only japanese engines are missing. Russian and French engine included

Allied Aircraft Piston Engines of World War II by Graham White ISBN 1-56091-655-9 420 pages. American and British piston engine of WW2

I have only one title about turbine engine

German Jet Engine and Gas Turbine Development 1930-1945 by Antony L. Kay ISBN1-84037-294-X 295 pages. Cover all feild of german turbine developement: aviation, marine, tank and utility.

Somes recommandation about specific engine type:

R-2800 Pratt & Whitney Dependable Masterpiece by Graham White ISBN 1-84037-335-0 700 pages. All you need to know about the Double Wasp and it integration on airframe.

Vee's For Victory! The story of the Allison V-1710 aircraft engine 1929-1948 by Daniel D. Whitney ISBN0-7643-0561-1 470 pages. Very technical. Contain a very good comparison between the 1710 and the RR Merlin.

R-4360 by Graham White availible soon. Should be as detail and well documented as the R-2800 book.

The first one is probably what you are mostly looking for. All the others cover resticted periode of time or engine type.

I highly recommand all of these book. I have all of them and the last one will be in the mail soon.

Enjoy

Jeff St-Pierre
