Oshkosh 1970's Slides

This is the airplane that really hooked me as a child. Invasion stripes, five propeller blades, and *TIP SMOKE*!!! Absolutely!

I think this was owned by Frank Sanders at the time? Later highly modified for air racing and won a Championship with Mike Brown.

Yes, and he flew a great solo routine with it!

You wouldn't happen to have a shot of a red and white Culver Dart? It was my Grandfather.

I will look closer. There are probably hundreds or even thousands of slides. I will keep an eye out for the Dart and scan if I see it.

This reverse angle photo answers some of your questions. The T-33 has 'Fighter Imports, Chino CA" on the nose. The P-51 does say "Penhall Co" on the canopy frame and has a white race #81 on the bottom of the left wing. This slide is really bad with dark dust. I started cleaning it but gave up. Too many other slides to do to spend that much time on this one, but I will post it as is.



These photos are awesome! Keep them coming, dirt specs and all don't matter to me. So, all three of these planes were Penhall's and that Mustang I think also still had the race 81 on the vertical too. I'm pretty sure Steve Hinton made the emergency landing in it while leaving this show.

Wow those were all very impressive. Interesting at how many aircraft weren't painted as "Warbirds" back then.

Here ya go. I "took" very similar pictures of the Gulfhawk 4 Bearcat after it made its crash landing south of the field in the early 90's. Sadly the film in the camera never took up. Grrr.

Sanders 232 and the previously mentioned Firefly. I wish they would put more 'like' rare types up together at Oshkosh these days.

One of my favorite shots to date, the XP-51 out enjoying the show. I still recall seeing Paul do an aerobatics routine in this and then the final flight before it was to be put away in the museum.

Staying with Mustangs, Jimmy Leeward off on what appears to be a morning flight, I am guessing that is his wife Bette in the back, and the early namesake for what was to become Cloud Dancer.

Gallant Warrior starting up for an early flight. I know that back in the day the Warbird group would organize a mass fly-out to the Playboy Club on Lake Geneva. We would always hope to be out there the day it happened. When general camping was right next to Warbirds that was easy. Once we moved south to Camp Scholler this got more difficult. Some people we camped with quit coming when the drive in campers got moved away from the Warbirds.

Quick sidebar -I noticed the Fighter Imports logo here which is very similar to Fighter Rebuilders logo. Since Hinton and Maloney got their start with Penhall, did they take inspiration from his company's name and logo?
