At the risk of sounding like a kook . . .

I did not want to mention anything about this, but I realized that if I do not, the doubt will keep nagging me forever.

Three weekends ago, I was driving North on US-95 in Idaho, towards McCall and Cascade.

My attention was caught by an airplane flying very high, but I could still distinguish a silver glint and the exhaust condensation at altitude; the general direction of flight was West to East.

What was interesting, was that the exhaust came out in short puffs, disappeared for a brief time, and then it came out again, leaving a very distinct "dotted" line in the sky. 100% sure it was not an airliner, since there was a single exhaust track.

As luck would have it, traffic was heavy and being a mountain road, I did not have a chance to stop to snap a picture.

Does anyone here, has seen anything similar?

It might of been a new secret air force air craft... or maybe it was flying though varying densities of moisture. Cool site I bet either way.

We have a new secret air force ? What's wrong with the one we already know about ? :D ( That should open up a can of worms !)

I vote for the "varying densities of moisture" theory. I've seen that a couple of times around here but the ones here were commercial.

Mudge the sky-watcher

Art Bell has a cat on his show that talks about that now and again. They're flying the new mega pulse jet birds outta area 51. They were able to upgrade the V1 style propulsion with some technology they brought back through the Stargate.

Yep, but you probably won't see it, due to the cloaking device and all. That's why they're having problems with these sightings, It's hard to cloak exhaust in the atmosphere at 60 thousand feet.

ALIENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am getting the answers that I expected . . .

If anyone has seen anything like this, please let me know either here or via PM.

Aliens and similar stuff are not the area of my interest.

I consider myself to be serious enough not to play or joke when matters get serious, and I am 100% positive of what I saw.

As I said, at the risk of being taken as a kook . . .

Dont worry, I'm with ya Tulio! What you describe sounds similar to what is usually refered to as a "donut on a rope" contrail. Do a google on it, you'll find some decent photos of what they look like. I actually saw one of these myself once, although I can't find a photo of what it looked like on-line. There was some guy on a show about Area 51 that took a photo of a contrail that looked exactly like what I saw, sort of like this:

--l---l---l---l---l---l

Was out mowing the yard one day, when I happened to look up and see this huge contrail above me. It wasn't there a few minutes prior, and wouldnt ya know the batteries were dead in my digital, and I had no film for the 35mm. I'm still wondering why they would be flying whatever this thing was around North GA in broad daylight!

But if you think your sighting was cool, wait till ya see one of those "black flying triangles"..... :D

(OK, let the UFO jokes begin....)

Tulio.

Sometimes at higher altitudes the layers of warm and cold air are contained in relatively flat or compacted zones. By that I mean if you were to climb striaght up through it you could detect at a given point in time when you passed from one to the other. In other words, there is little mixing of the two temperature zones, they are distinct. However, there are occassions where these layers can be rippled or even wave like, so that an aircraft passing horizontally through the zones would move quickly from cold to warm to cold to warm and so on. The condensation you saw would correspond with the various temperature layers of atmosphere in this wave like condition. From the ground it looks like morse code. I've seen it here in South Australia a few times primarily because the further north you go the warmer the temperatures, yet we get cold air at higher altitudes streaming up from the Antartic.

You are not going nuts!

cheers

Thank 'ya, Gunner.

Yes, the exhaust trail looked very much like the one you showed above.

Without any photo proof though, it is just my word on what I saw . . . : (

Dear Kernel:

In my time, I was known to enjoy the product of the fermentation of hops and barley, and the chemical dissolution of coca cola and rum, and mostly the sweet taste of Gin and any of the lemon-lime soft drinks (not tonic, though), but I have never, ever, in my existence, smoked, used or employed any substance that is illegal.

This of course, is narrowing the possibilities of what I have seen, to either diabetic induced hallucinations, feverish mirages caused by a withdrawal from Moxie, or simply, the tin-foil hat is not working anymore.

If you are talking about what is commonly called " doughnuts on a rope" type of contrail, I have seen them over Portland, Oregon twice. Both time were several years ago.
