B-29 APU pics

Sun Apr 16, 2006 6:46 pm

Thought all the B-29ers out there would like to see what an original, complete "as removed" (and unrestored!) APU looks like. Just had this one come in a few days ago... I'll post the "after" pics in about 10 years when I finally get around to working on it :D Enjoy the junque!!

And finally the fuel pump. All those familiar w/ the demise of the Kee Bird will know the significance of this.....

Got to ask - where did this come from?

Is this the God-damned device that caught fire on "KEE-BIRD" and caused it to burn to the ground, by any chance?

That fuel pump looks like the one on my 1945 Jeep!

Tigercat, it wasn't the apu that failed on Kee Bird. It was the jury rigged fuel line that broke during the rough taxi.

It came from a man's estate in FL. Don't know why he had it, or where he got it from...but I do know he didn't store it very well!

Pretty neat. Watch the asbestos covered line (at least it looks like it).

Hmmmm I wonder what he could be referring too?

I think we are starting to tread the fine line of too much info here

I wish 100 LL was free, too. Well, keep trying and maybe someday they'll expunge your record and you can get back to ground school for your private license.

John, what the %$@! Why are ya telling everyone about our private conversations?? Man, that isn't right! And as far as my license is concerned, like I said...It's not like I did this on purpose!!

This looks identical to the one I have out of a C-131....I guess they used them in a bunch-o-planes. The only difference is the pull starter and the box with the gauge on it. And I thought that the demise of KeeBird was brought about by the use of a gallon gas can suspended above the APU by safety wire that fell and spilled during taxi? :( Sad at any rate. Does yours rotate? Do you have any literature on it for disassembly? I'd love to restore mine and get it running....

Man, that was just wrong!!

But hey Tim, thanks for sending me those bottles of your "home brew." It was a bit strong for my tastes, but I've actually been using it to clean & degrease the APU. The stuff works great!!! :P

The fuel pump wasn't working on the APU, which is why the gas tank was rigged above it to gravity feed.

I don't have any manuals dealing soley w/ the APU's, but they're not difficult work on. The one in the pics is froze up of course, I have another one that is operational, and another that I use for parts (but could be running if need be).
