Rather interesting in this story is that the survivors were saved when an Li-2 landed and picked them up. The Li-2 being a license built copy of the DC-3.

Glad to see them actually taking it apart, since the first news article I had read stated that they cut it apart for transport.

Seems like a lot of bucks being spent on a C-47 recovery ... but hey ...one more preserved is all good :D

Yeah I was a bit surprised that all this time and effort was spent on a C-47, but I'm ecstatic all the same to see her saved. Hopefully more treasures will keep emerging out of Russia. Maybe a Pe-8?!

Yeah, but if we found an Li-2 in Alaska, we might go to the same troubles. Article said there were no C-47s preserved in Russia.

The good news is that they can buy spare parts to complete the static restoration for mere pennies. I think it looks cool as is, the paint looks awesome with the old U>S> insignia peeking through.
Shame it couldn't have been another FW 189 or Stuka or something.

Great to see another being saved. Probably many more "treasures" waiting to be found! :drink3:

It might be the case that it was within their means to save. Sometimes if you want to save a warbird you can't be too picky. You do what you can. Im not too concern with the C-47/DC-3 population at the moment. But it's alarming the amount of Gooney birds finding their way into the weeds around many airports. Save everything you can before its too late.

On the way back from Reno, I thought I saw an old C-47 at LAX ?

That might have been "Spirit of '76" .. a DC-3 in Unocal corporate colors parked outside the LAX Flight Path Learning Center & Museum.

Jumped onto Google maps and I see one sitting next to the Flight Path Learning Center on the south side of the airport.
