Greybull - WY Prop Heaven

I had the very distinct pleasure of visiting Greybull, WY today.

For those of you who have been there, you know what I am talking about. For those of you who have not . . . : )

For openers, I met Ralph Reiner, now curator of the Museum, and a retired USAF pilot, still going strong at 82 years young; he shared some of his memories of flying during WW-II, and also flying to this day, and his participation in the flying of aircraft for the movies Flight of the Phoenix.

Then, I met WIXer Brent, who could not have been nicer. Of course, he is from Texas, so that explains a lot : )


I walked the ramp, walked the parts yard, walked the junk yards and then drove to the back forty, where they have all those Neptunes, Boxcars, Hercules and a couple of other birds (izzat a DC-6, Virginia?).

The B-26 is for sale, gang!

Shot over 200 photos, some times more than one of the same aircraft.

What a BLAST!!! To add icing to my cake, I had the very special thrill of seeing the Tetons yesterday, and drove the Ten Sleep Creek highway and climbed the mountains. What else can I ask for? Props and mountains . . . my cup runneth fulleth genthlementh : )

By any chance were you thinking of hiking/riding up Bomber Mountain to see the B-17 remains?

No, I am afraid not.

I am on a schedule and although I wish I could explore, I can't. Weather has been nasty today, high winds and snow showers and rain.

Scott: You don't need to ask, we have a standing agreement, remember? Since I have more pictures, please let me know what you need, and I will either reduce them in size, or send you the whole thing.

Don: I should have done a better trip planning, and my research was poor, because I completely missed that collection in Drigss . . . and who knows when I will ever be able to do this again.

I went looking for a P-51 at the Jackson's Hole airport, but all I could find was a solitary Moose, peacefully chewing at whatever it is that they eat. : )

Great shots! Do you have any more photos of those fuselage sections lying on their bellies. At least one of them looked like it came from a C-82 Packet, rather than a C-119. They are incredibly rare, and it would be interesting to know that at least one further fuselage survives (for the moment at least... my guess is that anything that can't fly will end up being scrapped sadly). Were there any more of those ERCO waist gun turrets lying around either? That was a very cool surprise!

The turrets that I saw, were these:






Compared to the Airliners Net picture, the C-82 has been moved to the ramp; after I returned from taking pictures of the airplanes in the storage area, Mr. Reiner was just finishing showing the interior of the C-82 to a group of visitors, and I did not want to ask him to open the airplane again...

The Airliners Net picture shows in effect, two C-82 nose sections, and the picture is basically what I have, so I won't post a repeat.

I am almost positive this one was on the show circuit around fifteen years ago. The owner hauled a Jag or a BMW around. That sure beat begging for a crew car!

That C-119 is a puzzle. I was trying to remember the story and couldn't quite pull it out of my memory. Something like- there was a guy named Dave Brady (?) that owned and started ASA commuter airlines and he had a warbird collection in Georgia. He had a C-119 , a A-26 and a T-37. I think the C-119 was at the opening ceremonies of the new runway 20L /02R at Nashville BNA in 1987. Anyway he was killed shortly after that going to an airshow. He was in the T-37 and while making a photo pass of the A-26 they clipped the Invader's right wing. Both occupants of the T-37 were killed and the Invader made an emergency landing somewhere, maybe near Chattanooga.
I remember the plane maybe being called the Georgia Box, it couldnt have been on the airshow season more than a year or two, and then disappeared. Possibly the only C-119 ever on the airshow circuit. Can anyone confirm or clarify my memmory?
