Can someone explain what a usergroup is to me?

Its a group of people on/in a certain thing. Like an Army Regiment

Its a feature of the software package that isn't used in this forum. As far as I can tell it allows people to join a group that I could give a dedicated forum to and limit people who see it and/or post to it to those members. Haven't really found a purpose for it yet.
