Bf109E replica being built in Cornwall UK

Mon Mar 27, 2017 8:54 am

A new 109 static replica being built by GateguardsUK at Newquay. The attention to detail I think is superb. This could be the first of many, as with this build, enquiries have come in from all over Europe. Wonder if anyone would like a T or a Luft'46 Z?

Neato.

Wouldn't mind having one of those rudders painted up to hang over the bar.

Where will it be displayed? (Or is this being built on spec?)

Good point, they could make enough to pay for the rest of the build by selling unpainted rudders to folks like us. I'd pay a nice chunk of change for one!

tiny white formation light is awesome. for behind the bar, would an operating light be too cheesy?

I don’t think it would look cheesy at all. Here is very short video of an AT-6 wingtip that I hung in my garage. I installed LED bulbs in the navigation lights. The strobe is controlled by a small circuit that was made for an RC model airplane.
The clip also shows the ceiling fan I made for the garage.

Thanks to everyone for their kind remarks, so much appreciated.

The object in the second photo is the castellation ring which sits between the prop blade and the hub and can be seen (well part of it) from the outside. They are incredibly rare and so we have made copies of one for this 109 and are making more for the owner and other interested parties. I wouldn't mind one myself as a 'souvenir' of working on this project.

And yes, Rudders. A lot of people seem interested in buying these and we are currently looking into setting up a small scale production line for such items, which then, of course, could include prop blade, ring and hub too. We have sold P-51 and Spitfire blades on stands before and these have proved popular for the man cave or study.

Currently in the workshops are 3 Spitfires of various marques, a Hurricane and a P-51. Just completed 2 Spitfires for the new Dunkirk film and a Lysander for 'Allied'. If anyone would like further information, please by all means PM me and I will do all that I can to help.

Best wishes,

Martin

Edit: May I just say that the rudder seen in the photos above is the plug from which the molds were taken. And which is now sat in my office as is redundant and was due for destruction. I will try and take some photos of the finished item tomorrow.

Have been into the hangar this morning and taken some photos of our first finished rudder. It's not as you can see in the correct position, but gives an idea of the size and detail built into the unit. We are very pleased with the result and that's all down to our wonderful craftsman, Dave Chapman. Using original plans and another expert's CAD drawings, it truly is a wonderful item.

The tapes and stitching look fantastic!

Any chance you could post an approximate cost, if you decide to sell these rudders?

Thanks in advance.

We are very pleased that so much interest has been shown in the rudders from all around the world. It's very early days for us, as in the past have only built complete airframes, but we will come back to everyone soon with news of the prices. Thanks to everyone so far. Once the 109 has gone and hopefully that won't be long, then production will start.

Best wishes to all and thanks again,

Martin

Tempted to see what one looks like in Swiss markings now! :)
