Wow! -- they appear to have hired real aircraft for the most part (except the Stuka I guess).

Either that or CGI has actually approached reality. Which it hasn't done often before.

I hope the story line isn't trashed up with love-interests. I thought the movie The Martian was brilliant for ignoring that.

For the filming, they used the three Spitfires based in England owned by the Friedkin family (of the six total they own/fly) - two Mk.1's (AR213 & X4650) and a Mk.V (EP122) painted like a Mk.1
They also used The Blenheim Society's Bristol Blenheim Mk.1 (L6739) and Historic Flying Ltd.'s Buchon (initially, the Planes of Fame Buchon was to be used, but that didn't happen). Large-scale RC aircraft, a full-scale Spitfire static mock-up, and a highly modified Yak-52 "Yakfire" (for some aerial cockpit views) were also used.

I was excited when it was announced Christopher Nolan was directing a Dunkirk movie. I was really excited when I saw spotters' pics of all the stuff JohnTerrell mentioned. I was super excited with the first trailer. Now I'm lost for words - it looks amazing!




Is that Harry Styles giving the "We shall fight them on the beaches" monologue VO? I knew he was in it but didn't realise he was playing Churchill

Maybe for the old historians, but I don't see this as a box office success with the modern crowds affinity for realism. No Ben Affleck or Brad Pitt as the heroes? Where's Harvey Fierstein as FDR and Jennifer Aniston as Eleanor Roosevelt jumping aboard the presidential yacht to lead the Brit civilians in the small boat evac? Where's the scene where the 2 lads saved from the grisly maws of Dunkirk by a crusty shrimper(Robert Shaw re-animated by CGI) on the way back to "Old Blighty" having a celebratory sex romp in the net locker? Boy has Nolan screwed this up!

I hope the movie does well, but I share your concerns. I think the movie business has moved on from those great long movies of my youth (Battle of Britain, Lawrence of Arabia, The Great Escape, The Godfather, etc.) with well developed characters and subtle plot twists. In fact, I don't remember a recent "successful" movie that went much over 2 hours, thrown-in gimmickry or not.

And realize, even older movies resorted to gimmicks in the hope of commercial success. How about the embedded love story in BOB? All it added was 10 minutes to the running time...

Looking pretty good.

My one major complaint based upon the trailer(s) is that it seems "too clean" and not enough chaos and clutter.

I really wish they had got the ex-Russell Group 109E up and used it instead...also wouldn't have minded seeing a couple more Spits and a Hurricane or two. At least there is more of a push for real than CGI.

Not enough mayhem and disarray on the beaches, in the trailer...though the 5 minute tracking shot you can watch on y-tube looks better.

The Churchill speech in the trailer I took to understand as being one of the characters repeating the words of Churchill, perhaps reading a newspaper or repeating the radio message (obviously no one is trying to make it seem as if it were Winston Churchill speaking) - maybe just a bit of narration to enhance the trailer is all.
