Mystery MiG-21 in Ohio

Tue Jul 18, 2017 8:47 pm

I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about the following MiG-21, registered to an owner in Perrysburg, OH:

http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry ... rtxt=321LS

The variant listed doesn't really make sense except as a generic one. Geoff Goodall's directories list it with a c/n of "PF1683", which suggests it could be a misidentified MiG-21PF, except that it then lists it as ex-PLAAF '905', and the Chinese never operated (or built) any of the MiG-21PF/PFS/PFM series. The location is also a bit odd, as the nearest airport would be in Mansfield, a bit of a distance away. I've meant to ask if it's hiding in a T-hangar somewhere at KMFD the past few times I've been there, but I've never remembered to do it. Anyone ever seen or heard of this bird? I'd certainly love to photograph it-a civil MiG-21 at a small-town Ohio airport would be quite the coup.

Very likely the same guy who owned P-51D N9LR close to 50 years ago.

Give him a call and see if he wants to talk about it with you!

Found this on another forum from early June this year. Mansfield I believe!

Our hangers back up against one another! He has two Super Cubs I drool over every time he opens the hanger door. Of course they are flanking a Mig 21, 310 and I believe a Pitts!

In 2001 I photographed a MIG or Lim with the number 523 on right side of nose which was at the Wakeman Ohio Airport in an open side hanger. i don't know if aircraft is still there as new owners are updating hanger situation. As I recall, the aircraft was dis-assembled, but seemed most parts there... 8)
