Anyone ever heard of this crash?

Quote:
Paul,

My mother witnessed the crash of an Air Force fighter during WWII. This aircraft flew over the roof of her house before crashing on a nearby Army base. Apparently the pilot died and the plane was wrecked.

Her recollection is that the incident occurred in Nov. 1942 but information from other sources imply Nov. 1943. She still lives in the house which is located in Brisbane, Australia. Other witnesses identified the aircraft as a P 47. I have reviewed information available on-line at the warbird site and have not been able to locate a reference to the loss of an aircraft in or near Brisbane. An historian is currently gathering information about the history of the area and has witnesses who heard the plane "running rough" immediately prior to the crash.

The local police and Fire Brigade responded to the resulting fire. Records from these department, covering the Nov 1943 timeframe, are missing. No other information has, as yet, been located to shed any additional information.

It has been speculated that the aircraft may have been on a flight after maintenance.

Can you provide any information or do you know where information may be obtained from over this?

With Thanks
Alan Graham

Perhaps scan these reported crashes in Queensland during WW2?? on Peter Dunn's Australian's at War web pages??

No obvious reference to a P-47 crash in Nov 42 or Nov 43, in Brisbane?

Dutch Falcon at Eagle Farm in Nov 42 might be a candidate?
