NAS Alameda, CA shortly after the USS Hornet & Doolittle's Raiders departed in 1942.


Not a bad rendering of the USS Hornet leaving Alameda. This is a combination of a real USS Hornet photo and some photoshopped additions.


"0821 Commenced launching aircraft." Those few words, as recorded in the aircraft carrier Hornet's deck log, detail the start of Jimmy Doolittle's legendary raid on Tokyo on the morning of April 18, 1942.

Below is just another example of why it's so important to keep reminding folks of historic WWII events. The longer the time passes the more the history can become distorted. This example below may not be that big a deal to most people, but to many of us who care and try to present the facts as they really were this is unacceptable. This was a limited edition of a Jack Lorusso painting signed by 8 of the Doolittle Raiders. I have no idea if the Raiders who signed it were simply too old to see errors or what, but I certainly don't blame them for a lack of research.

December 24, 1896 - James Doolittle was born in Alameda, California. He came to St. Louis in 1930, to manage the Shell Oil Company’s Aviation Department. Doolittle quickly dominated the aviation-racing world and set a new transcontinental record in 1931. In 1942, Doolittle led the first United States bombing raid on Tokyo. The town of Centerville, on US 66 in Phelps County, Missouri was renamed in his honor.

Amazing life of a one of a kind aviator and patriot.
