Dakota Territory Air Museum/ TFLM

They seem to share a common "people", specifically Warren Pietsch. Will a majority of TFL's planes go there? Was there even a hangar that housed TFL's planes or did they sorta stay wherever? I've seen a lot of recent pictures of Dakota Territory and a lot of "TFL's" planes are there, and now the P-47 is theirs. Is it incorrect to think that Dakota will get a lot of the TFL planes and the rest will be sold to interested parties like the P-40 and Avenger were?

The Dakota Territory Air Museum has always been one of the alternative locations that the TFL fleet would stay at, outside of the main headquarters at Ellington Field in Houston. At least part of the fleet always spends the winter at Minot, for display and to undergo annual maintenance/inspections. The P-51C, P-40E, Wildcat, Spitfire, Corsair, P-51D's, B-25 and C-53 have all been based at Minot/Dakota Territory Air Museum as of late - some of which have been active just within the last couple weeks, like the C-model, Spitfire, Corsair and P-40).

I did notice the change in name of the ownership of the razorback P-47 at AirCorps, now being the DTAM rather than TFL, though I think it is likely a change in entity/title rather than being "sold".

I checked out their website and noticed that their P-51 is described as a "parts" airplane...and mention who made the wings.

I don't think I've ever seen a warbird owner be so upfront about their aircraft's provenance.

Anyone know how the FAA lists it....experimental or does it have the identity of a real Mustang?

The re-born “Dakota Kid” is a “parts” plane rebuilt at Tri-state Aviation in Wahpeton, North Dakota. The wings and flying surfaces were rebuilt by Bob Odegaard in Kindred, North Dakota and the remainder was undertaken by the late Jerry Beck at Wahpeton, North Dakota. Both of these people and their staffs are true artists as shown in the final product. This reborn “Dakota Kid” also has a modified dual control of Jerry Beck’s design.

(Captain) Noble Peterson became an acquaintance in early 1990 along with some of his flying experiences. When the restoration project was acquired, he was kept abreast with info and photos. When finished, it seemed only right that it should be painted in the colors of the original “Dakota Kid”. A 358th “Angels” insignia was added on the side, and the “Dakota Kid” name was enlarged and lowered to make it more visible.

To clear up any confusion, Texas Flying Legends Museum (TFLM) and the Dakota Territory Air Museum (DTAM ) have been sister museums since TFLM was established in 2010 - DTAM was established in 1987. Both museums have shared in the operation and display of the TFLM collection for eight years. Both museums have also shared two major donors, one of which has decided to step back from the warbird industry to contribute to another foundation. The TFLM hangar at Ellington Field in Houston has been sold as well as the P-40K and TBM Avenger. The Zero, Corsair and B-25 from their collection are also for sale.

The remainder of the collection, nine airworthy aircraft, will continue to be maintained, operated and displayed by DTAM in Minot, ND. These planes include a Normandy invasion veteran Spitfire Mk IX, P40E, FM-2 Wildcat, C-47/C-53 Skytrooper “Duchess of Dakota”, Harvard Mk IV, P-51C “Lope’s Hope 3rd”, P-51D “Little Horse”, Iwo Jima veteran Stinson L-5 Sentinel and an F8F Bearcat recently emerging from restoration by Ezell Aviation in Breckinridge, TX. http://www.ezellaviation.com

The museums have had a commitment to not only campaigning flying warbirds but also to bringing them back to life. To this end, they have a long standing, close working relationship with our AirCorps Aviation, https://www.aircorpsaviation.com/ based in Bemidji, MN. AirCorps has completed two award-winning projects for DTAM so far – the Harvard and the P-51C “Lope’s Hope 3rd”.

DTAM currently has two other projects in progress with AirCorps, a P-47D Razorback and a P-38 both Pacific theater veterans. They also have a Hurricane being finished up next year by Ray Middleton in Fort Collins, CO and a P-51D Mustang expected to come out of restoration next year restored by Casey Odegaard in Kindred, ND.

For eight years now these owners, pilots, and crew have given us the gift of displaying these aircraft throughout the U.S.. They have tirelessly moved aircraft and engaged enthusiasts, honored veterans from all service branches, flown for President George H.W. Bush and the Air Force Academy. Most importantly they have honored our prior generations while inspiring future generations.
