His book "Riding Rockets" is one of the best books I've ever read about NASA, as well.

No lucky, he visited the last RF-4C that was still intact at the boneyard at the time of his visit. There are many other F-4C and RF-4C survivors on display. Wiki lists 14 RF-4C's on display in the US, and even more regular C series aircraft. Yes many have been scrapped, but the Phantom in most all versions is pretty well preserved (in museums, gate guards, pintle mounted, dumped on photo ranges, derelict in various yards, as targets, and currently one flyer on the airshow circuit, and a still active with several air forces) throughout the world.
